Combination feeding!
Yes, as the name suggests, combination feeding is a mixture of breastfeeding and using formula. It combines all the natural goodness of breastfeeding with the practicality of formula feeding, ensuring your baby gets the best of both worlds.
What are the main benefits?
How to combination feed –
There really is no one way to combination feed. It’s up to you to determine what kind of combination works best for you. You could alternate between formula and breastfeeding for each feed. You could match certain times of the day with breastfeeding or formula. You can even take your formula and your breastmilk and mix them together to feed your child a ratio meal from the bottle. Some people like to breastfeed whenever they can, but have a bottle for emergencies, such as babysitters or late-night feeds. It’s all about finding what’s best for you.
What is the best formula to use with combination feeding?
There is often a worry among parents that children will prefer one or the other if you keep swapping from formula to breast milk. After all, it is a problem if your baby starts to reject one or the other. As such, it is always best to use a formula that closely mimics natural breast milk.
Fortunately, we have some options for you below:
Holle Bio Stage PRE Organic Infant Milk Formula
This is a great formula to use in combination with breastmilk, as the latter contains added probiotics but the former does not. It can be used from your baby’s birth and meets the certifications set by Demeter for organic products. There is no starch, no added colors or flavors, no maltodextrin, and no GMO. It uses whole milk that contains good fat rather than vegetable oil additives. In short, a whole lot of good nutrition!
HiPP Bio Combiotik Infant Milk Formula
This formula uses organic skim milk, closely mimicking the natural lactic acid bacteria, probiotics, and prebiotics in breast milk. It contains no gluten, no GMO, no synthetic preservatives, no maltodextrin, and no starch. It provides a whole lot of nutrition for your child with DHA, Omega 6s, Omega 3s, and a variety of additional nutrients and vitamins. It even adheres to the stringent European organic standards.
Holle Goat Stage 1 (0-6 months) Organic Infant Milk Formula
Holle uses organic goat’s milk to create this formula, which is perfect for children who don’t get on well with cow’s milk. The proteins are smaller in goat’s milk, meaning they are easier to digest, just like the proteins in breast milk. This formula has no added colors, flavors, chemicals, or preservatives. It also has no soy and no GMO. It meets the stringent European organic standards and can be used from day one.
Final thoughts
Remember, it really is about what’s best for you when it comes to creating your own combination plan. However, European formula is always a better and more reliable option than US products.
]]>This Staff Report, which was drafted by The Subcommittee on Economic and Consumer Policy, Committee on Oversight and Reform, was actually a response to a study from back in 2019, which was originally conducted by Healthy Babies Bright Future (HBBF), a non-profit. This study looked at 168 products from 61 different brands of baby food and formula, testing levels of toxic heavy metals. Of course, as with any consumable product in the United States, tests and standards are maintained by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, however, there is no maximum for heavy metals found in baby food and formula products.
The reality of the situation is that heavy metals are trace ingredients found in most foods, especially food that grows in the Earth. That being said, the levels can be increased by environmental contamination. So, it becomes a question of whether these products have more than a natural amount of heavy metal, and whether the amount should be considered ‘too much’. The human body, more specifically the kidneys and liver, has the ability to filter heavy metals out of our system. Unfortunately, not every person can do this as efficiently as others.
When these baby foods were tested, there were some worrying levels of heavy metals:
As such, some experts have argued that the current FDA rules are simply not strict enough on this matter. Even though the vast majority of baby food and formula you buy at the store is still safe to consume, and the heavy metals are unlikely to pose a high risk, it is thought that any controllable exposure to added heavy metals should be… well, controlled.
What about Europe?
There are different guidelines and regulations in Europe, with Merieux NutriSciences being one such agency in charge of analyzing and consulting on baby food products. Their website states clearly that: “Requirements and limits for contaminants and residues in baby food are very stringent, with much lower levels than any other non-baby food product: pesticides, veterinary drugs, mycotoxins, heavy metals, etc. must meet strict requirements to ensure safety and quality.”
The general rule for most of these types of regulations is that Europe has instilled far stricter guidelines than the United States. However, even with the US levels in some baby food brands, it would still take an incredible amount of heavy metal to actually become a problem. Of course, parents always want what’s best for their little ones, and that means reducing a tiny risk into a minuscule one.
As such, we have taken every available step to ease your fears by stocking European baby formula rather than American alternatives. With the more comprehensive regulations from the European Commission, we feel safe knowing that we are providing the very best and safest products for your baby. Even beyond the issue of heavy metals, European baby formula include better quality ingredients and often removes additives found in many US versions. Not to mention the fact that European organic products have to include a minimum of 95% organic ingredients. Only the best for your little ones!

Am I using the best formula for my baby?
If you are looking at making a switch to a particular formula, or simply want to know whether making a switch is a good idea, you have come to the right place. After all, small dietary changes can make a big difference for your child, so let’s dive into the details.
Where to start
The first place to start is always… why? Why are you looking to make a switch in the first place? What concerns do you have with your current formula? Usually, there are two main reasons behind a desired switch, tummy troubles and your baby’s temperament.
Temperament
Many parents look to switch formula because their baby is fussy or irritated. And yes, these things could come as a result of the formula you are giving them, but they could also be caused by a number of other things. Baby’s become irritated by a whole number of things, as outlined by SeattleChildrens – sometimes it is literally impossible to pinpoint the exact reason. It could be hunger, overfeeding, they need changing, they need burping, they are tired, they are overstimulated, they are hot, they are cold, they are uncomfortable, or something else.
Remember, your baby is an individual person, and with that comes an individual temperament. While some babies are smiley all the time, others can get the grumps – it is completely normal. It takes some children a little longer to find their feet when adjusting to new things, which is why some are fussier than others. Even if your baby has been diagnosed with something like colic, it doesn’t mean the formula is definitely to blame.
Tummy troubles
Tummy troubles and similar symptoms can cause a parent to worry - whether it is inconsistent diaper movement, spitting-up, gas, hiccups, straining, or something else. It’s all about understanding what is normal and what is a symptom of a wider issue.
Remember, your child is very young, and so is their digestive system. Everything is new and working itself out. In the womb, they never had to digest food coming from the mouth, so switching things up can be a process. There are so many potential reasons behind digestion issues that have no relation to the food itself, as outlined by LiveStrong. It may be that their pancreas is still in the developing stage, meaning they don’t have a high level of enzymes for digestion. It may be that the valve in the oesophagus is still developing and does not yet effectively stop gas/reflux. It may be that their stomach is not yet fully protected against bacteria/microbes as the mucosal barrier is not fully developed. Or it may be that their gut microbiome is not fully developed yet, which is more common in C-section babies.
For all of the above reasons, every baby experiences some form of symptom at some point. Therefore, if the entire reason for you changing formula is because of one of these symptoms, the best thing to do is first consult your paediatrician for a professional opinion on the cause of their symptoms.
Switching formulas should always be your last choice – Here’s why
Babies are very sensitive to change. After all, every single change is something wild and new to them, something they have never seen or experienced before. For nine months in the womb, they lived in the most controlled environment in the world, so changes will take time to get used to.
How long does it take for a baby to get used to a new formula?
It can take up to 14 days for a baby to acclimatise to a new formula. That is a pretty big deal. If you switch formulas too often or too soon, it can make any digestive problems or temperament issues even worse for a period of time. Therefore, you should first look towards a less drastic solution than changing formula. We recommend:
It can often be easy to fall into the trap of believing that switching formulas will be the magic solution, but that is simply not always the case. In many cases, it makes things worse. Therefore, we recommend any and all of the above before you turn to the last resort of swapping formulas.
Why and when you should actually switch formula –
If you have tried absolutely everything, including the suggestions we made above, your child may indeed require a switch of formula. The conditions that necessitate a switch include:
CMPA (Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy) – Two or three of every 100 children have this, and it involves their immune system mistaking cow’s milk protein as an invader that needs to be attacked.
Galactosemia – This condition does not allow a child to process galactose (a type of sugar). This condition is inherited and rare.
Intolerance to corn or soy – Some babies are intolerant to the soy or corn in formula, in which case HiPP HA PRE is a good alternative.
GERD or silent reflux – Reflux is completely normal in young children up to four months, but children suffering from severe symptoms (called atypical, abnormal, pathological). Sometimes, in these cases, thicker formula that sits in the stomach a little heavier is the best choice. One good option is HiPP AR Anti-Reflux.
If your paediatrician recommends a partially-hydrolysed or extensively-hydrolysed formula option, then HiPP Comfort is much easier for digestion due to the smaller, broken-down protein.
It is always a good idea to consult your paediatrician for advice on specialised formulas, and just general advice over whether you should be swapping formulas in the first place.
How to switch formulas
If your paediatrician has given the okay for you to swap your child to a new formula, the important thing to remember is to take baby steps. The slower you introduce the new formula, the easier the process will be, and the less likely your child is to show additional or elevated symptoms.
Final thoughts
Choosing the perfect formula for your baby can be overwhelming, and the best way to avoid the need to switch is to pick the best option from day one. Fortunately, you can find lots of advice on our website to do just that.

0-3 months
Babies will grow a lot during these first months after birth; they look and feel tiny when you bring them home, but be prepared for them to get bigger. While at first, all they do is eat, sleep, and poop, they will learn to recognize (and feel comforted by) the sound of your voice. During this stage, they focus on nearby objects and faces - tracking them also with their eyes. By the time they reach three months old, your child will recognize their parent’s faces from farther away - as well as other people’s. They begin to smile and make more noises that mimic your speech by cooing, opening, and closing their hands, and holding up their own head as their neck muscles strengthen.
4-6 months
Your baby’s personality starts to come out more, as they smile and babble more. Over the next few months, keep an eye on them rolling over from front to back first, then back to front, sitting up with support (pillows, couch, etc), grabbing toys or their feet with hands, putting weight on their legs in a standing position, and showing more interest in your food as they start to be introduced to some solid foods at six months old.
7-9 months
Mobility is key during these months as your child grows and wants to move around more. Now is the best time to baby-proof your house as your child will want to put everything in their mouth. You may expect your child to be able to sit up by themselves and pull up to a standing position using items and furniture, start to crawl, recognize familiar words like ‘no’, babble ‘mama’ or ‘dada’, and play games such as hide and seek or peek a boo - the great thing about games like these is that it helps your child to understand object permanence, so when they realize this, they know that it an object or person can’t disappear when it’s hidden. If you hide under a blanket, then they will look under it to find you. One thing they also do is use their hands to point at things they are interested in; they will use their forefinger and thumb to pick things up - otherwise known as the pincer grasp.
10-12 months
It is now the final months of that wonderful first year of caring for your baby and they are growing a lot and becoming more independent (almost at the toddler phase). Your baby will be able to cruise - that is, pull themselves to a standing position and then walk around the room holding onto items for support. This is the final stage before they start to walk completely by themselves. There are times when your baby may make that step at this stage too, but it is more likely to occur when they are 12 months old. Anywhere from 8 to 18 months is considered normal. They will start to say more words and enjoy hearing the rhythm of children’s books - picture books will help them grasp the meaning of some words. They will use hand gestures to communicate, like waving to say goodbye.
They may also mimic your actions and behaviors, if you talk on the phone, they will try to do the same action with a toy. They will like to put things in containers and then take them out again.
When should you be worried?
This is merely a guide of averages, so there is a wide range of what is considered ‘normal’ because children develop at different rates and can still develop healthily. While these are estimates, there are still situations that may need investigating just to make sure your baby is healthy.
Babies who are born with health issues or are born prematurely could take a little longer to reach these milestones, but it’s not important that your baby should hit certain milestones at certain ages. Trust your instincts as a parent and contact your healthcare provider with any questions you may have. Attend all the checkups also, so you can monitor your baby’s progress with your doctor.
Encouraging development
Your baby will develop at the pace they do, but you can do some things to encourage healthy development. Things like talking to your baby throughout the day, making eye contact, and identifying the emotions they have so you can see the best way to manage them. Reading to your child also helps even singing and playing music help.
Prop them up to encourage sitting or challenge them to reach for a toy that is a few feet away to help them develop their fine motor skills. Offer them toys to reach for and grasp from when they are younger, and eventually, they will be able to start using the pincer grasp so they can grab small food bits to feed themselves.
You should make sure your child is full, whether you’re breastfeeding, using a formula, or a combination of both. The route you take to get to the goal isn’t important as long as you use one of these routes that are best for ensuring your child is full. Promote your child’s emotional and mental development by making sure there is consistency in your daily routine.
Child-proofing your home will help your child explore naturally and reduces the number of times you will have to say no to them.
Last but not least, get as many cuddles in as you can as it gives your baby security and comfort as you have a special bond with them - so be sure to strengthen it.

We need sugar!
It is important to realise that when sugar is mentioned with regard to baby formula, it may not actually mean table sugar that you pour directly into your tea. It often refers to the nutrient group, saccharides, which often end in -ose so are easy to spot. These include fruit sugar (fructose), starch sugar (glucose), milk sugar (lactose), and cane sugar (sucrose). These sugar components are a source of carbohydrates, and they must appear in some form for formula to mimic natural breast milk.
Did you know that over 33% of the calories within breast milk come in the form of lactose sugar, which is why the EC and FDA both state that 40% of baby formula calories must come from carbohydrates. Your child needs these calories for energy and metabolism, as they break the carbohydrates down to create energy which can then be used for development and growth. Essentially, without carbs, your baby wouldn’t have the energy they need to grow and learn.
The type of sugar
The US has some restrictions over which sugars can be used to provide the 40% calorie mark, meaning there is debate over which carb source is the best. It is often even discussed whether the type of sugar matters, so let’s take a look at the options.
Lactose
This is hands down the best sugar for your child. Why? Because it is the sugar naturally found in breast milk. Your baby is literally designed to be able to digest this carb source as the vast majority of children are born with lactose enzymes. Formulas often attempt to mimic breast milk as much as they can, so lactose is a common sugar to be found. In fact, the European Commission even state that lactose must be the primary carb source in standard formula.
Corn Syrup Solids
This really depends on where you live and what product you buy. Corn syrup solids are banned by the EC but allowed by the FDA in the United States. You will find corn syrup as the primary carb source in many US products, which is controversial as it is often made from genetically-modified corn. The corn syrup is dehydrated to remove the water and turn it into a concentrated sugar solid, and is often used because it is readily available and cheap. Corn syrup is a glucose (starch sugar) and even though it sounds similar, it is not the same as high-fructose corn syrup (which is a blend of fructose and glucose).
Studies have reinforced that corn syrup solids do give your child the calories they need and are safe to consume, despite the controversy. Corn syrup is also known as a fast-acting carb, meaning it increases your blood sugar level at a fast rate, which is why it is provided in tablet form to those with low blood sugar.
The Glycemic Index
Corn syrup solids and other fast-acting carbohydrates rank high on the glycemic index, with the value being found by calculating how quickly 50g increases the level of sugar within a person’s blood.
The Glycemic Index Foundation state: “The Glycemic Index (GI) is a relative ranking of carbohydrates in foods according to how they affect blood glucose levels. Carbohydrates with a low GI value are more slowly digested, absorbed, and metabolized and cause a lower and slower rise in blood glucose and, therefore usually, insulin levels.”
The quicker blood sugar levels are increased by a carbohydrate, the more insulin the body creates in order to metabolize that sugar. And, as we said before, children are already set up to metabolize lactose (46 on the Glycemic Index). However, glucose comes in at a GI of 100. So glucose actually raises blood sugar levels at twice the speed of lactose.
Therefore, lactose is metabolized slower than glucose, which helps to maintain insulin and blood sugar alike. Yes, babies can usually deal with the 100 GI of glucose, but human beings are now specifically designed to deal with those levels at such a young age. There have also not yet been any studies into long-term impacts.
Sucrose
Most people think about sucrose when they think about sugar – even the name sounds similar. This is the table sugar we are all used to seeing on our counters. And it may sound like a strange choice for baby formula, but it is actually preferred to glucose like corn syrup solids. The GI of sucrose is 65, so it is metabolized slower than glucose and it is not banned by the European Commission either. However, there are limits in terms of when it can be used and how much can be used as an ingredient in infant formula. If fully-lactose formula is not on the cards for you, then sucrose, albeit not the optimal choice, is not the worst choice either.
Maltodextrin
Maltodextrin actually has a higher GI value than even glucose, however, because it has broken down sugar molecules, it is still easier to digest and is a preferred option for sensitive tummies. The corn derivative is either used as a primary carbohydrate source, supplemental carbohydrate source, or thickener/natural preservative.
It is not usually used as the largest carb source in baby formula, unless the child is not able to digest carbs from other sugar sources. The glycemic value of maltodextrin is very high and the vast majority of the US supply is genetically modified. However, it is safe to use as an additive or supplement and is certified organic in European products. Therefore, European products with maltodextrin are much better than US versions.
Summary
Remember, all babies need sugar and carbohydrates to grow and learn. If possible, lactose is the best choice for this job because it mimics breast milk. However, if this is not possible then sucrose formula or organic and non-GMO maltodextrin products are good options – with corn syrup solids as the last resort. If you are looking for the best formula products featuring the above, look no further than our range of HiPP, Holle, Jovie and Premibio formulas!

As we have said, it is very normal to be concerned about this, as all parents want to ensure their child is getting the right amount of milk to grow healthy and happy. It is important to remember that there is no ‘correct’ amount of milk for every child across the board; every child is different and so their needs will also be different. What you should do instead of obsessing over the right amount of formula, is observe your baby’s growth; your healthcare provider will assist with checkups to keep track that your baby is growing and gaining weight at a healthy rate.
Typically (and we mean it) infants gain between half an ounce and an ounce of weight every day for the first three months of their life. Between three and six months, they usually gain an ounce of weight every day. Despite stating that, in the first five days, it is normal for babies to lose as much as 10% of their birth weight. Therefore, if you notice a dip in their weight around this time, don’t panic. When they’re two weeks old, they should be back up to their birth weight.
Feeding times and amount
Babies give several signs they are hungry and tend to feed only when they are hungry, but also stop when they’re full.
The following are hunger cues that can be easily spotted:
Crying could be classed as a hunger cue if they have been hungry for a while, but babies cry to communicate a range of things, like a wet diaper, needing to be burped, or wanting to be picked up.
If your baby has surpassed the recommended amount of formula during a feed, don’t be alarmed. You don’t have to stop the feed, it just means you need to prepare a slightly larger bottle for the next feed. Finishing a bottle quickly and searching for more is an indication that they are still hungry; this can occur especially if they are having a growth spurt, which often happens around 1-3 weeks, 6-8 weeks, 3 months, 6 months, and 9 months - they can happen at any time though.
This brings us to the opposite scenario: if your baby isn’t finishing the bottle and appears to be full - or wants the milk in smaller quantities - this is okay too. Your baby may just be distracted or fidgets, which means they have done feeding.
There will also be days where your baby isn’t that hungry, or vice versa, and again this is perfectly normal, though there are guidelines on how much formula roughly your child should be consuming.
Standard advice would tell you that before solids are started on, in the first 4-6 months, they should drink around 2.5 fluid ounces (74ml) per pound of body weight every 24 hours. Putting this into an example, if your baby weighs 8 pounds, then they will need to have roughly 20 fl. Oz. through the day and night. However, that means the maximum they should drink is 32 fl. Oz (946ml). We have a feeding chart on our website that will aid you with the most suitable feeding amounts for your child.
A healthy intake of formula
While there are many ways to see if your baby is getting enough of the formula, the most important one is their mood after a feed. The normal mood for a baby after a fee is contentment and happiness. Another great way to detect if they’re drinking enough is the diaper changes; keep track of them as there is a general rule that formula-fed babies will need 5 or 6 diaper changes per day (6-8 if using cloth diapers).
Is drinking too much formula a thing?
If you are concerned that your baby is drinking too much, there will be signs such as projectile vomiting, tummy pain, or tension after a feed. Some spit-up is normal, but if they are doing so frequently or if there’s a lot, then that may also be a sign. If you feed them more often but with less formula, it may help to prevent this issue.
After keeping an eye on your baby’s growth, if you feel they are gaining weight too fast then you should speak to your doctor about it. This can occur if you’re feeding your baby when they’re not hungry but just want attention or just need to be burped. So make sure you watch out for these signs!
Your healthcare provider may recommend alternatives rather than giving the bottle to the baby - maybe cuddle them or play with them instead of trying to feed them more formula.
We also have formula feeding charts so you can know how much formula to mix with the water as well, so you know you’ve got the right amounts. Older babies tend to have fewer feeds - especially at night, so they need larger bottles for each feed. However, your baby still shouldn’t consume more than 32 fl oz of formula every 24 hours.
An important thing to note is that with European formulas, the measurements will be in milliliters (ml). Therefore, the conversions are included in the feeding chart so you have the option of looking up what formula you need in fluid ounces instead. Make sure you get the right unit of measurement otherwise it could all go wrong!
Once your baby reaches six months of age, there will be fewer feeds as your child will be introduced to solid foods. Those feeds will have larger bottles so they can hold more formula. When they get to one year old, they can safely transition onto cow’s milk or a stage 3 formula with three meals a day and healthy snacks.
For younger babies, you feed them on a “demand” basis, every two to three hours with just half a fluid ounce (15ml) of formula to start with. They can start to drink one to two fluid ounces after a few days.
Formula feeding chart
The special feeding chart we have on the website is a general guide for babies that are only fed formula. As an example of interpreting the chart, a six-week-old baby should have around 5 or 6 feeds a day with bottles that have 120ml (4.1 fl oz) and four scoops of powder. However, the mixing ratios are different for the Holle Goat formula, so consult the separate chart on the Holle Goat formula page on the website.

What is Soy?
Soy is made from soybeans and is used to create products such as tofu and soy milk (whole soy products), soy sauce and miso (fermented soy products), soy protein isolate and meat and cheese substitutes (processed soy products), and soy lecithin (oil and derivative soy product). Soybean oil and soy protein isolate has also been used as a protein and fat source for infant formula, while soy lecithin has been used as an emulsifier.
What are the benefits of soy?
Soy products come with a number of minerals and nutrients, with HealthLine listing Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Iron, Potassium, Thiamine, Folate, Riboflavin, Magnesium, Zinc, Phosphorus, Copper, Manganese, Vitamin B6, Niacin, and Vitamin E.
Soy also contains a prebiotic fibre to help digestion, as well as a plant-based protein. Some have even suggested that soy can help with high cholesterol or menopause symptoms. The majority of experts do admit that soy can be helpful when used in a balanced diet and eaten in moderation.
What about soy in infant formulas?
Formula uses soy in three different ways, either as a source of fat, a source of protein, or an emulsifier. The most controversial when it comes to infant formula is soy protein.
Every infant formula on the market has to contain some form of protein source by law, as that is also a huge part of natural breast milk. Most products turn to cow’s milk for this, but soy-based formula uses soy protein isolate as an alternative. This is usually for children who cannot use milk formula or consume natural breast milk, perhaps because they suffer from Galactosemia. Almost all babies are born with lactase enzymes to break down milk protein, some are not. Therefore, the AAP suggest that ONLY babies with lactase deficiency (hereditary) or Galactosemia can use soy formula. Galactosemia is completely different from CMPA and infants who have CMPA should not consume soy formula. Instead, they should opt for extensively hydrolyzed formula like HiPP Comfort, amino acid-based formula, hypoallergenic formula like HiPP HA PRE or hydrolyzed rice based formulas such as BeBe M or Premiriz.
Soy formula also does not contain animal by-products, which is why some vegetarian or vegan families opt for it as a plant-based food source.
The problems with soy formula
Over recent times, there have been increased worries over the use of soy protein, especially when it comes to baby formula. Reproductive cells and tissues can be impacted and changed by the phytoestrogens (contains estrogen-like compounds) found within soy protein.
The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia stated: “Soy protein contains high amounts of genistein, an estrogen-like compound. Like other estrogen-mimicking chemicals found in the environment, genistein can alter the body’s endocrine system and potentially interfere with normal hormonal development.”
There have not been any wide studies into infants and soy exposure as of yet, but animal studies have indicated potential early onset puberty and breast tissue and reproductive tissue changes. Another study indicated that women may have longer periods if they were given soy-based formula as children – they are also more likely to have endometriosis. A third study said that gene activation can be changed if a child is exposed to soy early in their life. As such, we agree with the AAP that soy formula should never be used unless it is completely necessary.
The safer soy
Soybean Oil
Companies use oils in baby formula to mimic the natural fat found in breast milk, as well as to give the child the fatty acids and nutrients they need. Cow’s milk is pretty different to human breast milk, so vegetable oils are added to infant formula to provide those fatty acids. However, plenty of US products use soybean oil for this job, despite not marketing their products as soy formula. This is because soybean oil is readily available, cheap to use, and has a lot of those fatty acids we mentioned. Soy oil is taken from the fatty part of the soybean plant, where phytoestrogens are not found, meaning the problems stated above do not apply to soybean oil. The most common problems with soybean oil revolve around pesticides used on the crops which may leave residue, genetic modification, and oil processing which can result in trans fats. However, if the soy oil is made using organic soy, those problems also vanish! If a product has an organic certification, it means it is free from GMO and pesticide residue. So if you see the organic label, then you are good to go!
Soy Lecithin
It can be easy to just ignore soy altogether in order to guarantee that you avoid any issues. And while soy formula and non-organic soy ingredients are problematic and should not ideally be consumed by infants, soy lecithin does have its place.
Soy Lecithin is a by-product of soy oil and is usually used as an emulsifier in formula products, which means it helps to stop fats and oils from separating. You likely consume soy lecithin on a daily basis, as it is included in things like peanut butter, chocolate, salad dressing, and even some brands of tea. In powder products, soy lecithin can also be utilised to stop clumping. If you eat processed foods, it is extremely likely that you consume soy lecithin.
The benefits of soy lecithin
All lecithins, including soy, are made up of phospholipids and oil, with the main soy phospholipid being the phosphatidylcholine compound, which is also found in natural breast milk.
The National Institutes of Health state: ‘Lecithin is a mixture of choline, choline esters, fatty acids, glycerol, glycolipids, triglycerides, phosphoric acid, and phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine that are normal components of human milk.’
Therefore, infant formulas often use soy lecithin as a stabiliser to prevent clumping, while it also increases the micronutrients in the formula to get close to breastmilk levels. That’s why it is used by products such as HiPP Dutch Stage 3.
The concerns with soy lecithin
Soy lecithin actually only contains small traces of soy protein, for anyone worried on the exposure front. So even kids with soy allergies can still consume soy lecithin safely. The problems with phytoestrogen are not really a concern when it comes to soy lecithin, due to the low soy protein traces. However, we still recommend that you consult your paediatrician before introducing a new formula, especially if your child has a soy allergy or you have any other concerns.
Final thought
Soybean oil and soy lecithin are both safe to use and consume in baby formulas, however, you should opt for non-GMO and organic soy ingredients. However, soy-based formula should be avoided if possible. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out and contact our team of experts who would be happy to help.]]>
Studies have shown that women without the support of a partner suffer from anxiety and depression more, but those who had that support had a noticeable decrease in anxiety and depression. Emotional support, financial support, and participation (like attending scans and classes with them) all helped to reduce stress for the mother - which would impact the baby’s health also.
So, how does a partner be ‘supportive’? A poll to a 23,000-member Parent Support Community gave the following answers:
You should listen to what your partner says she needs and wants - this is the best way to be supportive during this big change.
Now there have been examples, let’s dive deeper into them.
Communication
Ask her what would help her specifically; women experience pregnancy differently from each other, so make sure you are communicating to meet her needs. Every woman also has a different preference as to how they want their partner to be involved. Work out what works for you but be proactive in helping with things she hasn’t asked you to.
Invest in time to strengthen your relationship and, if you are having your first baby, cherish the months you have left with just you two. If you have children, then show each other and the children with love and attention before the adjustment of welcoming another child into the family.
Education
Get researching and reading all about pregnancy and parenting; whether you purchase them, check out some blogs or borrow books from the library, learn more so you are more prepared. Attend a childbirth class with your partner during the later stages of pregnancy and talk with friends with babies to get any advice you need.
The following is a list of resources to help:
Physical Support
Many changes are occurring in your partner’s body during pregnancy - and after, as well, so be prepared to ride the wave as she may need different things from you as she goes on the pregnancy journey.
Fatigue and morning sickness are typical ailments a woman in her first trimester typically experiences, and her appetite may be limited due to this. Therefore, don’t take it personally if she can’t eat the dinner you’ve cooked, it may just be down to her body and nausea.
Things calm down in the second trimester and even out, their energy typically increases and nausea calms down. It’s usually the time she eats more - so you may notice weird pregnancy cravings too.
The third trimester is when the bump will grow, and it can get very uncomfortable to sleep unless in certain positions (with pillows). Common effects may include heartburn or her feet swelling due to carrying the baby. Be patient, and if her joints are aching, offer to give her a massage, bring her extra pillows, or whatever she needs to help make herself comfortable.
Give her support in making healthy life choices during the pregnancy; encourage exercise and promote eating more fruits and vegetables (or join in!).
Emotional Support
As well as life changes and physical changes, your pregnant partner will have significant emotional changes and hormone levels will be changing, which will cause mood swings, so be patient with her and sensitive to her emotions. If she needs to rant, let her, though make sure you are expressing your feelings too as communication helps. You are partners in this journey together, so you should be able to open up to her about all the new changes and what they are making you feel.
Planning and decision-making
A lot of planning and preparation goes into having a baby, so make sure you get involved with them. A few examples of some of the important decisions you would have to make include the type of baby equipment to buy (car seat, stroller, highchair, etc) then the best care-taking items (diapers, soaps, shampoos, pacifiers, etc) - as well as parental leave from work.
More decisions include organizing childcare for when you need to return to work - as well as the fees that go along with it. Be around to support, voice an opinion and organize these things because your partner will appreciate it. Setting up the nursery may mean you lend more of a hand because lifting heavy items and assembling things isn’t something your partner should do while pregnant.
Other things that need planning include:
Situations are, of course, subject to change so you must be able to adapt to whatever is thrown your way. While it is best to address it, you should let your partner make most of the decisions as it is her body.
You may also attend prenatal appointments with her so you can see for yourself how the baby and mother are doing.
At around 24 weeks, a baby can hear your voice, so you can sing to them talk, or even read to them while they are growing inside your partner.
Small things such as helping to pack a bag for the hospital when the due date draws near.
Intimacy
Intimacy will change throughout the pregnancy - and after your baby is born. However, it is safe should you both feel up to being intimate with each other. Sometimes, other physical connections work best - like cuddles, kissing, and massages.
Take care of yourself, too
While there is a lot of focus on the pregnant mother, be sure to keep looking after yourself too as it can be overlooked during pregnancy too. Partners can also get overwhelmed and increase their chances of anxiety and depression. Don’t forget to communicate with your partner and talk to a therapist if it becomes a daily feeling. Develop some habits as a stress management tool and engage with hobbies and exercise to make yourself feel a little better.
Resources
There are many resources out there for new parents (and those who are parents already) to look into so you can prepare more for parenthood. The following resources are a great place to start:
This is downloadable content that will give you some great advice.
Extra Support
While you need to help look after your partner, you also need to look after yourself. Before you know it, you will be changing diapers and feeding your newborn, so invest in yourself now. It will better prepare you for becoming a parent.

So, if you are staring at that test thinking, “What now?” Then you are in the right place there are a few steps you can take next to begin your pregnancy journey. You have plenty of time to sort things out so take everything slow and enjoy the special time that is pregnancy. We’re parents too, so we have been in your shoes!
Make an appointment at the doctor
You must schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider to look into prenatal care options. You will have routine check-ups and scans throughout your pregnancy to check that the baby is growing normally and that you and the baby are healthy. The first prenatal appointment should occur when you are around 8 weeks pregnant, so you should make sure you write down a list of questions that you have so the healthcare provider can give you the answers you need. Any medications or supplements that you are on must be disclosed to the doctor so they know.
Prenatal vitamins
During pregnancy, your body needs more vitamins than usual because you are growing a child inside you. You can purchase them over the counter as they are usually any multivitamin called prenatal vitamins. Ideally, your folic acid intake should increase from 400 micrograms to 600 micrograms as it has a very important role in developing the baby's spinal cord and central nervous system. However, it isn’t recommended for pregnant women to take vitamin A as this may cause issues with the baby’s development. Vitamin A should be obtained from your diet in the form of milk, egg, carrots, and dark, leafy green vegetables. So, make sure you check the label when looking at vitamins.
Pregnancy symptoms
Pregnancy is different for everyone; some women don’t have many - if any - and others have many symptoms. The process contains significant physical changes so it’s natural to have uncomfortable symptoms such as constipation, tiredness, swelling, sore breasts, and a weaker bladder. To battle nausea in the early stages, stay hydrated and eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day that are high in protein but low in fat should help.
Despite your best efforts, the sickness may persist but keep on holding to the thought that it won’t be forever. It mostly ends in the second trimester, though if this isn’t the case, book an appointment with your healthcare provider.
Have good sleep
In the later months, getting a good night’s sleep can be challenging, and some women report having sleep issues through their pregnancies, so there are ways to combat this. Getting a full-body or pregnancy pillow will help make you more comfortable.
Sleeping on your side is recommended (on the left is ideal) after 20 weeks of pregnancy, as sleeping on your back causes the uterus to compress the blood flow of the inferior vena cava. However, if you wake up on your back, don’t panic - just turn onto your side. Side-sleeping will end up being the most comfortable position for you.
Healthy diet
Aim to have a healthy balanced diet with the food you are allowed to eat while pregnant. Your body will need more protein, iron, calcium, and folic acid so you got to eat more fruit and vegetables and less heavy, processed food. Remember to also stay hydrated.
Ensure your meat is cooked properly though be cautious with cured meats like salami and chorizo to reduce the risk of toxoplasmosis. Avoid mold-ripened and soft cheese such as stilton, Danish Blue, brie, and camembert. They can be safer to eat if they are cooked until piping hot. If it is uncooked, there is a large risk of an infection called listeriosis. Caffeine is another thing to cut back on as well as stop smoking and drinking alcohol. Speak to your healthcare provider or an organization if you have concerns about this.
Exercising and resting
You must do both of these to stay healthy. It is safe to continue your daily physical activity or exercise routine if you feel comfortable doing so, though it is best to ask your healthcare provider. Do not do any intense exercise especially if your body is not used to it. Regardless of how active you were before that positive pregnancy test, avoid sports and exercise that could chance getting hit in the abdomen like soccer, ice hockey, kickboxing, or a risk of falling in activities such as horseback riding and gymnastics.
The most important thing is to listen to your body and rest when you feel tired. You will find you will get tired more often during pregnancy; this is normal so just rest.
How and when to tell others
Sharing the news of pregnancy is your choice; many women do wait until after the first trimester which is when the risk of miscarriage drops significantly.
As well to the excitement of telling your loved ones, there will be other considerations such as your work. If you work in healthcare or a job that includes strenuous annual labor, then you must let your employer know as soon as possible to make safety adjustments - especially if your workplace is stressful or high-pressure. Often people tell others at 12 weeks or 20 weeks even though it can be nerve-wracking to tell your boss that you are pregnant. Be aware of your company’s policies regarding pregnancy, flexible working hours, and maternity leave.
Baby feeding options
During pregnancy, it is best to do research and decide how you will feed the baby once they are born. It is an important personal choice to consider as some will choose to breastfeed, and others will choose formulas. There are pros and cons for both of them, and many different options to consider. There are many benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby, though it isn’t everyone’s feeding choice, which is acceptable. The choice is affected by many factors, but what is important is that the baby is happy, well-fed, and getting the nutrients they need. Combination feeding is also a very good option, but remember your decision does not have to be justified to anybody.
Even if you are at the start of your pregnancy, it is still wise to consider your options and be knowledgeable. If you choose formula or introduce formula at a later stage, then research their ingredients and pick an organic formula close to breast milk, such as HiPP, Jovie Organic Goat, Holle, or Premibio.
Look after yourself
Pregnancy is a period of intense change, so remember to be kind and patient to yourself. You may experience a whole host of emotions that are very powerful - including feeling anxious or overwhelmed about the physical changes and adapting to a different, new lifestyle. If you have mental health concerns, then check in with that prenatal healthcare provider of yours so you can get the help that you need. Remember, you don’t have to struggle with difficult emotions by yourself.

What is CMPA? What is CMPI?
These two terms stand for Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy and Cow’s Milk Protein Intolerance.
CMPA occurs when the immune system in your child mistakes the protein in cow’s milk as dangerous invaders that need to be attacked. Around two or three in every 100 children has this allergy, but it often disappears by their sixth birthday.
What are the symptoms of CMPA?
How can CMPA be diagnosed?
If you look through the list of symptoms above and your child only has one, it is unlikely CMPA. However, if your child is experiencing multiple symptoms at the same time, it should be taken more seriously, and an appointment should be made with your pediatrician. CMPA can only ever be diagnosed by a licensed professional.
What is the best formula to use for CMPA?
We recommend using either Bebe M or Premiriz as the perfect formulas for children with CMPA and there one sound reason for this:
The vast majority of formulas that are partially hydrolyzed contain some sort of derivative from corn. It can often be tricky to determine exactly what is causing an allergic reaction within a formula, so opting for corn-free and dairy-free products is the safest way forward. Despite this, even most products advertised as formula for ‘sensitive stomachs’ still contain corn. There is currently only one formula, and a rather expensive one at that, in the US that contains no corn or dairy, and that is Similac Alimentum Ready-to-Feed. Fortunately, Europe is here to save the day with two fully vegan & rice -based organic lines of formula.
Final thought
If you have any further questions about CMPA and formula options, do not hesitate to reach out and ask. We are always more than happy to answer questions and offer advice, while there are plenty of Moms and Dads out there who will happily offer help via support and community groups.

MAIN FEATURES OF PREMIBIO BRAND:
Some main features of this brand are:
ORGANIC:
Premibio firmly believes in organic. Although we adhere to the standards of the letter of the regulations related to organic certification, our notion of organic extends beyond that. We have always maintained that the Premibio line should not just safeguard the environment but also the associated nutritional expectations that it transmits.
PALM OIL-FREE FORMULA:
Even while there may be organic palm oil that satisfies all standards for organic cultivation, we believe this disputed ingredient has no place in organic food, let alone one that is intended for a baby.
The decision of Premibio brand's decision to market infant milk free of palm oil results from moral convictions and consideration of the nutritional sciences rather than a need to keep up with the times. This decision helps to set Premibio apart from other brands in the infant nutrition industry.
A BALANCE OF SATURATED AND UNSATURATED FATS WITH COCONUT OIL ADDITION:
Infant formula consisting entirely of unsaturated fats (often a blend of rapeseed and sunflower oils) can have n pro-oxidant impact. Such a lipid profile would be different from breast milk's lipid profile, which is largely saturated and has a maximum of only 50% unsaturated fatty acids. We have chosen coconut oil to balance the ratio of saturated/unsaturated fatty acids and get closer to mother's milk, despite its high cost caused by a production method that has remained largely artisanal.
Coconut oil used in Premibio infant formula provides lauric acid and medium-chain fatty acids, which are lacking from the other oils frequently used in newborn milk and help avoid a pro-oxidant effect (palm, rapeseed, and sunflower in particular).
Despite not being technically required, these two fatty acids still have a significant biological impact. Infants' bodies can quickly mobilize medium-chain fatty acids as a source of energy at a time when their need for energy is at an all-time high. Lauric acid also has anti-infective properties. These fatty acids are produced by the mammary gland even though the mother's diet does not contain them and are always present in breast milk so their addition to infant formula is a great idea.
OFFERS ALTERNATIVE OF COW MILK -GOAT MILK-BASED FORMULA:
2013 saw the introduction of Prémichèvre®, the first goat milk-based organic newborn formula. Infant milk manufactured from cow's milk was the only option available to parents and children who chose organic up until the advent of Prémichèvre®. Premichèvre®, a significant invention whose success paved the way for others, was the first organic substitute for an infant formula based on cow's milk.
OFFERS VEGAN FORMULA: RICE-BASED MILK FORMULA:
2014 saw the introduction of the first organic and "vegan" infant formula, Prémiriz® by the Premibio brand. It is rice-based infant formula.
We created Prémiriz®, the first newborn milk that is both organic and vegan, in an effort to make organic food more accessible to as many people as possible, including lactose-intolerant babies and parents.
With Prémiriz®, choosing lactose-free or vegan baby food is now risk-free, especially in terms of preventing your child from suffering from a nutritional shortfall.
This nutritional improvement was made feasible by the simple use of properly chosen ingredients, such as the usage of DHA from vegetable sources instead of DHA derived from fish oil.
PRODUCTS OF PREMIBIO BRAND:
The French-based company ‘Premibio’ offers 9 different products with 3 different types of infant formula.
Here are mentioned the three types of an infant formula of the Premibio brand and the different products or stages of each type.

The company works closely with farmers to get milk from the source and pasteurizes it in their completely renewable-energy-driven factory. They then add all the minerals and vitamins your baby needs before turning it into a formula powder. In contrast to the milk powder process, which can damage the protein in the formula, Kendamil turns their own raw milk (organically certified by the EU) to keep all that goodness inside.
Kendamil makes sure to utilise the milk’s full cream to ensure all the MFGM remains, which is a crucial ingredient within natural breast milk. MFGM is said to boost a baby’s cognitive development, and it also happens to make the product taste amazing (perfect for those fussy babies). What’s more, Kendamil products are also vegetarian, thanks to the lack of any soy oil, palm oil or fish oil.
The organic formula range from Kendamil also features GOS (a healthy prebiotic) and Human Milk Oligosaccharides. In fact, Kendamil have the only organic formula on Planet Earth to include HMOs! The HMOs within Kendamil organic milk, which occur naturally, are also present in colostrum after a mother gives birth and can boost immunity in babies. One of such HMOs, 3’GL, has been proven to help reduce gut inflammation.
Kendamil Organic Stage 1 First Infant Milk (from birth onwards) - 800g
Kendamil’s Stage 1 infant milk mirrors the same ratio of whey and casein as is found in natural breast milk (60:40). They also include the essential fatty acids for growth and brain development, including ARA, LA, and ALA, as well as DHA which is plant-based. This Stage 1 milk also contains the same natural fat as natural breastmilk, MFGM, which boosts cognitive development. Kendamil has even made sure to keep their Stage 1 product free from starch, soy oil, fish oil, palm oil, and maltodextrin.
Kendamil Organic Stage 2 Follow-on Milk (6-12 months) - 800g
Kendamil’s Stage 2 milk is a perfect option for parents who started their children on the likes of Holle PRE, which contains no maltodextrin or starch. The Stage 2 milk is also without these substances, using a whole milk formula with a whey to casein ratio of 40:60. Kendamil keeps its Stage 2 product free from starch, soy oil, fish oil, palm oil, and maltodextrin. Compared with the Stage 1 milk, Kendamil’s Stage 2 milk has more carbohydrates and calories, as well as more iron, as the needs of your baby change when they reach the six-month stage.
Kendamil Organic Stage 3 Toddler Milk (12+ months) - 800g
Kendamil’s Stage 3 formula still contains the nutrients and vitamins from the first two stages, using full cream milk. It also boosts immune system development with HMOs and plant-based DHA. Used beyond the 12-month mark, this is known as a ‘weaning formula’ designed to transition from liquid to solids. The Stage 3 milk has more iron but less fat, protein, and calories than Stages 1 and 2. Kendamil made sure to keep their Stage 3 product free from starch, soy oil, fish oil, palm oil, and maltodextrin.
Sustainable for the planet –
Not only do Kendamil put a strong emphasis on keeping your child healthy, but they have also made important steps to keeping the world around them healthy too. They cut down on their footprint by sourcing local ingredients, avoiding fish oil, and even conduct work to protect ocean wildlife and ecosystems.
Why everyone loves Kendamil –
Did you know that Kendamil is used by the Royal Family in Britain?! And it’s easy to see why, with the perfect blend of prebiotics, vitamins, nutrients, and plant-based DHA. Stages 1-3 are specifically designed to guide your baby through their first 12 months and more. They are one of the market leaders for a reason!

]]>Let’s start with plastic…
Plastic baby bottles are light, they don’t break, they are cheap, and they are easy to find in just about every local store. They also don’t make a mess if you drop them during a tired late-night feed. Instead of sweeping up broken glass, all you have to do is rinse off the plastic bottle. On the surface, they seem like the perfect option, however, there are some issues.
Plastic bottles are created using petroleum and carcinogenic substances and are not always able to go through the dishwasher. While they are cheaper, that often means they simply do not last as long, as the plastic degrades over time.
What you should know about plastic bottles –
The most important thing to know before using a plastic bottle is: is this product safe for my child?
Older plastic bottle products may still include something called Bisphenol A or BPA, which was an industrial plastic introduced and widely used back in the 1960s. Unfortunately, over the past 50-plus years, it has been linked with behaviour and brain development in babies, kids, and fetuses. In 2013, the government actually banned BPA as a material for all formula packaging and bottles. However, anything made before 2013 may still contain BPA, so make sure to double-check before using them.
Are plastic bottles safe to use?
In general, plastic bottles that are free from BPA are safe to use on your baby. However, some have claimed that chemicals can leak into the formula in non-BPA bottles too. If the bottle has been sat in the sun, you should avoid feeding your child from it.
How can you tell if a plastic bottle contains BPA?
If the bottle was made after 2013, it is guaranteed to be free from BPA due to US law. If there is no way for you to tell what year the bottle is from, play it safe and throw it away in exchange for a new one. BPA bottles are often marked with a ‘PC’ mark for polycarbonate plastic or a number ‘7’.
How should a plastic baby bottle be cleaned?
We recommend washing the bottles by hand with a bottle brush in warm water – but not hot water due to the non-BPA plastic and any potential chemical leaking.
Can formula be stored inside baby bottles?
Never store baby formula already in the plastic bottle as there is a chance chemicals could leak into the formula.
What to know about glass bottles –
Glass bottles also come with a number of pros. They are free from all plastic, they can be put through the dishwasher, and they are very effective. Just watch out if your baby develops a taste for throwing their bottle as glass does not react well to a drop from height.
Is it safe to use a glass baby bottle?
Most glass baby bottles are made with tempered glass, which makes it far stronger and less likely to smash. You can also add a rubber cover to the bottle to protect it further.
Can glass baby bottles be put through the dishwasher?
They can indeed! They are far easier to keep clean than plastic bottles for this very reason.
Can glass bottles reduce colic?
It is not factually confirmed, but some brands and products do claim to reduce gas and spitting up. Even if these claims are true, it is more than likely a design feature, not a material feature.
Can I store formula in glass baby bottles?
Yes, you can! It is perfectly safe.
Should I use a glass baby bottle or plastic?
It really depends on what you are looking for from your baby bottle. If you want something that is easier to clean, better for the environment, and free from plastic chemicals, then glass is your best option. If you are looking for something cheap and light that won’t break, then plastic could be for you. It also depends on your child and their feeding habits. If they are feeding themselves, then the safety of plastic may appeal. The same goes for babies who like to throw their bottle around. But if you are feeding your child yourself, then glass may be more effective.
]]>You probably know about Jovie as an innovative and genuine baby formula rooted in The Netherlands, that sets itself apart from other organic goat formulas, or A2 formulas for that matter, on the market by doing something really special. Since it has a high nutritional profile and easily absorbed proteins, Jovie organic goat milk is quickly gaining popularity in Europe and is excellent for infants who have cow milk intolerance.
The brand Jovie takes great satisfaction in using only organic whole goat milk and lactose, obtaining strict EU organic certification, running independent laboratory tests for known toxins (such glyphosate), and demonstrating continuously outstanding performance.
Here is a detailed guide on what makes Jovie Brand so special.
HOW JOVIE FORMULA STARTED?
Jovie is a brand from Europe that offers a high-quality formula for babies. It was created by an expert team with many years in the goat milk infant formula business and healthy nutrition for babies and children.
A key part of the Jovie baby formula team stems from Kabrita's baby formulas team. The Jovie team left Kabrita soon after and started developing Jovie baby formulas for what they say is “the next level goat” and successfully introduced the goat milk formula driven by the desire to constantly improve and challenge to make the best goat milk products.
The Jovie team has a true passion for bringing you high-quality, pure, and nutritious full cream goat milk that is free of palm oil, soy, and maltodextrin. It is rich in essential vitamins and minerals.
The most important decision of Jovie was to make organic goat's milk a key ingredient, and the first ingredient, for making it as close to nature as possible.
JOVIE BABY FORMULA IS CERTIFIED ORGANIC:
Europe has some of the strictest regulations for baby formulas. Jovie meets these quality standards and makes products safer, healthier, and better for families.
To provide the best food for your baby, it's important to meet strict organic regulations. Jovie meets the EU's minimum organic content criteria and has received a more thorough and regulated process for certification, which is a little stricter than the USDA's certification process.
The EU organic label must be accompanied by the farm's location, and animal welfare criteria are included in the laws, which is the most notable difference between EU and American standards. The code for its EU organic certification is NL-BIO-01.
Apart from this, the facility where Jovie goat milk formula is made holds some other certifications including halal, kosher, and the Scheme for Food Safety Management Systems.
The producers of Jovie European baby formula use extensive and environmentally beneficial organic farming practices. No GMOs, preservatives, pesticides, or synthetics are used during production or manufacturing practices. Multiple quality checks from soil to production are done. No hormones or steroids are used on animals and goats are fed a 100% organic grass diet. Antibiotics are only used to keep animals healthy and a minimum of 95% of organic ingredients are used.
SOME MAJOR INGREDIENTS IN JOVIE FORMULA:
Jovie infant formula sets the bar higher than the industry norm by using organic goats' milk as its primary ingredient.
Jovie goat milk is specially formulated for young children with delicate tummies. Goat's milk formula is a fantastic substitute for cow's milk formula because it offers vital nutrients similar to those found in breast milk. Some information about ingredients in Jovie milk formula is as follows:
Goat Milk Formula
It's crucial to start with the correct milk when selecting an infant formula that closely matches the digestion and nutritional value of breast milk.
Due to its ubiquitous availability, parents and other caregivers frequently assume that this should be cow's milk. Unfortunately, formulations made with cow's milk are now widely acknowledged by both families and medical professionals to be uncomfortable for many newborns' digestive systems and physical comfort.
Jovie decides that goat milk will make the best foundation for infant formula in light of this and makes goat milk its no.1 ingredient.
Full Fat Goat Milk:
Jovie takes pride in using 100% organic goat milk, which closely resembles the nourishment obtained via breastfeeding. 50% of the calories consumed by breastfed newborns come from fat.
Because whole goat milk has many advantages, Jovie uses as much goat milk fat as it can. This is a crucial contrast from other goat milk infant formulae from Europe and America that include components with milk fats extracted from defatted or skimmed milk. The richness and goodness of natural goat milk take away the need to add undesired ingredients such as maltodextrin or palm oil for making a complete formula.
A2 Milk
Goat milk naturally contains A2. Simply put, this means that the goat milk formula by Jovie is casein-free. Grass-fed goats only produce A2 protein milk and this makes it closely resemble breast milk.
Being free of the casein protein chain is crucial because when A1 milk from cows is digested, an inflammatory peptide called BCM-7 is released. BCM-7 is easily absorbed, enters into the blood, and travels throughout the entire body.
Parents and scientists have both provided compelling evidence connecting bovine BCM-7 to several illnesses.
It is fantastic to learn that Jovie goat milk formula is naturally A2 and has a high concentration of short and medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), which improves the full-fat milk's overall digestion and absorbability.
Softer and smaller curds
Goats' milk frequently includes softer and smaller curds, making it simpler for newborns to digest. Milk curds can irritate the stomach. Many parents discover that using goat's milk reduces sensitive stomach conditions like reflux.
AA and DHA:
The additional higher quantities of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially unsaturated omega-3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) & unsaturated omega-6 fatty acid AA (arachidonic acid), in full-fat goat milk are another natural advantage (Omega 6).
DHA and AA play a part in normal brain function and development and influence a child's future IQ and cognition.
No coconut oil and no palm oil:
Jovie goat milk formula can omit contentious additives like palm and coconut oil, which other European and American baby formulas utilize to provide the essential levels for brain development, due to their greater levels of brain-developing fatty acids. However, palm oil is known for environmental damage, causing discomfort in babies because of having a fatty acid with no optimal structure.
Without maltodextrin
Jovie is adamant that providing a goat milk formula with all-natural, organic ingredients is a crucial step in ensuring your child's long-term health.
Jovie can provide organic, all-natural energy by using full-fat goat milk instead of maltodextrin, which has no nutritional value.
Mineral and vitamin-rich:
Micronutrients are essential for the general health and well-being of your body. The term "bioavailability" refers to how much of an eaten nutrient is absorbed and made available to the body for systems including growth, repair, and development.
The bioavailability of vitamins and minerals, which are richer than those found in baby formulae based on cow milk, is a natural benefit of utilizing full-fat goat's milk.
Among other significant vitamins and minerals, the Jovie goat milk formula has highly accessible nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, potassium, vitamin A, and copper.
Zinc and iron
To maintain health, the body needs minerals. Minerals are frequently ineffectively absorbed by the body across the intestinal wall in their native, inorganic state.
This is the reason the body tries to change the mineral into a biological or organic substance. Chelation is the name of this procedure. This natural chelation process is difficult and frequently not functioning at its best, which can lead to less efficient mineral absorption.
Minerals like iron and zinc are added to the Jovie goat milk formula in the chelated form to help with this process and provide higher bioavailability.
When opposed to minerals that are in their inorganic forms and are not chelated, chelated minerals have improved bioavailability, which refers to how quickly they are absorbed and incorporated into the cells and tissues of the body.
Prebiotics:
Galactooligosaccharides (GOS), a dietary fiber that encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria, are now added directly to the formula in European goat milk formulae for the first time. Given that GOS is already present in infant formula, many parents don't have to supplement their baby's diet with GOS to ease constipation.
GOS, which is present in breastmilk naturally, is an essential prebiotic fiber that supports the growth of good bacteria, such as bifidobacteria, in the large intestine and may have a positive impact on immune system development.
Breastmilk HMOs:
Recently, "human milk oligosaccharides" have received particular interest from the scientific community (HMOs). HMOs are a particularly unique class of prebiotics that are present in human milk.
The full-fat goat's milk in Jovie goat milk formula naturally contains a few different forms of HMOs, which is a lovely bonus.
Folate:
By providing folic acid, Jovie keeps raising the standard in terms of growth and development.
Folate is well known for protecting against neural tube abnormalities (NTDs) during pregnancy and is crucial for healthy cell and tissue growth.
In Jovie goat milk formula, folate collaborates with vitamins B12 and C to support the body's use of existing proteins and the production of new ones that are necessary for the formation of red blood cells.
It aids in the creation of DNA, the genetic information-carrying molecule that serves as the basis of the human body. Additionally, it is also necessary for improving mood.
The amazing decision to have folate in baby formula made by Jovie is commendable as folate is crucial for growth.
STAGES OF JOVIE ORGANIC GOAT INFANT MILK FORMULA:
Jovie, in contrast to many US formula manufacturers, has developed different stages of formula because they understand that newborns need various nutrients at different stages of growth. The regulated composition of optimal infant formula has some complex ingredients, but each ingredient is there for a reason.
Jovie offers full-cream goat milk bliss that is kind to your newborn's sensitive system and offers all the organic nourishment required for the developmental changes your baby experiences every day in the first few months of life.
All three stages are preferable for a particular age of your baby if the baby has a sensitivity to cow milk formulas and you need a high-quality, lactose-based formula. The main carbohydrate source is whole organic goat milk in all 3 stages.
Jovie Stage 1 (800g/28oz formula powder):
This formula is suitable for babies from 0-6 months. It is A2 whole organic goat milk with no palm oil, coconut oil, soy, or sugar added whereas extra GOS probiotics are added to the formula for maintaining better bowel health for the baby.
The first stage of Jovie goat milk is organically certified and has all of the nutrients required by European infant formula standards and the minimum FDA nutritional requirements (without exceeding any maximums) and has a slight preference for proteins over fats. From birth, you may reliably feed your little one the best grade of infant formula and be confident that you have chosen high-quality sustenance based on high-quality organic ingredients from the start of your baby’s life for better growth and development.

Jovie Stage 2 (800g/28oz formula powder):
It is a good follow-on for 6-12 months old babies. It is A2 whole organic goat milk with no palm oil, coconut oil, soy, or sugar added whereas extra GOS probiotics are added to the formula for maintaining better bowel health for the baby.
Since full cream organic goat milk was chosen as the main ingredient, Jovie goat milk stage 2 is certified organic and contains all the advantageous elements.
As you begin introducing basic fruits and vegetables to your child's diet, Jovie organic goat milk stage 2 is specifically created to be a great complement by providing complete nourishment for your baby starting at the age of six months. This Stage 2 formula shifts towards a higher protein (more than 8% than stage 1) and about 3% less fat than stage 1, and also fewer sugars. However, it has more bioavailable iron in form of ferrous sulfate. From 6 months of age, the anemia rates in children begin to rise so iron is required by them.

It should be made part of a balanced and varied diet to boost vital vitamins and nutrients even for fussy eaters.

This is suitable to have a higher protein-to-fat and carbohydrate ratio as the child gets older.

Apart from these 3 stages of Jovie goat milk formula, the brand Jovie also offers a goat milk powder for big kids from 3-9 years and even for pregnant and lactating moms.
WHY SHOULD I SELECT A FORMULA MADE WITH GOAT MILK?
The most crucial thing is that as a parent, you are comfortable with the decisions you make for your child. Goat milk is renowned for being inherently simple to digest. Increased quantities of short- and medium-chain fatty acids that are simple to digest are another benefit of using whole goat milk. Additionally, goat milk is a great source of vital vitamins that are highly bioavailable.
DOES THE JOVIE FORMULA MIX EASILY WITH WARM WATER?
We found that Jovie didn't leave any film, residue, or clumps on the inside of the container and that it mixes quite well with warm water (they recommend using water at about 104 degrees F). Not only that but after a hard shake, there was no bubbling or foaming. That's quite uncommon, and we love to see a formula powder blend with water so effortlessly!
WHAT WILL BE THE TASTE AND TEXTURE OF THE JOVIE GOAT MILK FORMULA?
We didn't notice any graininess in the texture or flavor, and we believed the formula was smooth and flavorful. Due to the high lactose level, the flavor was sweet without being overbearing.
Although most people are not major fans of drinking goat milk as adults, it was a nice surprise that this tasted nothing like goat milk!
CAN WE USE SOMETHING ELSE INSTEAD OF WATER FOR THE PREPARATION OF THE POWDERED FORMULA?
Never use anything other than water to make the powdered formula. To protect your baby from serious harm, you must first get your doctor's approval before adding formula to your breast milk.
THE ONLYFORMULA.COM WRAP-UP:
Full-cream Goat milk is a key component of Jovie Goat formulations. The benefits of natural goat milk are locked in this formula to its maximum and make feeding a joyful experience as it is easy to prepare and babies enjoy, accept, and are satisfied with the taste and texture.

When to use toddler formula
Stage 3 formulas should be used when the package says it is suitable. Some types can be used as early as 10 months, while others can be used after the child turns one. While giving your child this formula, you should be giving them some solid foods also, including fruit, veg, fiber, grains, and proteins. They should have a varied diet to help them grow.
When switching over, we recommend doing so over a few weeks so the child gradually gets used to the formula. Below is an example of how to wean your toddler onto stage 3 formulas:
Day 1: 2: 25% new formula; 75% old formula or breast milk
Day 3: 4: 50% new formula; 50% old formula or breast milk
Day 5: 6: 75% new formula; 25% old formula or breast milk
Day 7: 100% new formula
This schedule won’t work for everyone, so you have to adjust it to your child.
Different formula types

What are the ingredients in the stage 3 formula?
Here is Onlyformula.com we have a range of stage 3 formulas, all of which are regulated for safety and nutritional value. The brands we use are Holle, HiPP, and Jovie Goat all EU certified. While ingredients may vary slightly between all stage three formulas, there are common ingredients that have been added to ensure your growing child has everything they need. They are:
When is stage 3 better than whole cow’s milk?
This question is best directed to your pediatrician and what they recommend as well as what you are comfortable with as a parent. Ideally, your child should consume a varied diet full of essential nutrients and should have a combination of milk and solid food. If you are concerned your child isn’t getting enough nutrients, then stage 3 is best for you to try - problems like a lack of vitamin D can be solved by having your child consume stage 3 formula. HiPP conducted a study that showed children who drank stage 3 formula after they turned one, had better levels of vitamin D than those who had transitioned to whole milk.
What food is included in the nutrients?
If you do want to use cow’s milk you should still make sure your child has all the other nutrients and vitamins as well. So, this is all about the food you can feed your child to make sure they still get those nutrients. You will need foods high in fiber as they are a good source of prebiotics - bananas will be your best friend for this! Yogurt is another good toddler favorite - which is great for you as it contains probiotics. Long-chain fatty acids such as ARA and DHA can be found in formulas and breastmilk, but also fish and eggs. However, with this, consult your pediatrician first as to when your child should be introduced to them.
Vegetable oils, nuts, eggs, peanut butter, and meat all contain polyunsaturated fats - chicken and fish are included as they have omega-6. However, caution must be used in your baby’s diet plan, so make sure you check in with your pediatrician, who can give you professional advice on introducing polyunsaturated fats.
Cheese and yogurt are fantastic additions to their diet for whey and lactose as well as dietary protein and carbs. On top of that, they make good, small snacks for babies. However, you’ve got to be careful with added sugars.
Should I use stage 3 formulas instead of whole milk?
If you aim to ensure your baby has more nutrients then yes, use stage 3 formulas. However, this doesn’t mean it completely substitutes their diet; they will need solid food and a varied diet at that. Plus your child has reached the stage of wanting to eat solid foods too.
However, if your child is not a picky eater, and will eat a whole range of food, then you can just give them whole milk, but just make sure their diet is varied. Listen to your toddler and observe what they need, as well as seek advice from your pediatrician.
To compare the two, stage 3 has more nutrients than whole milk and milk alternatives. While it is classed as a formula, it certainly isn’t as micro and macronutrient dense as the stage 2 formula. If you have more questions regarding stage 3 formulas, we have a Toddler Formula Guide on our website, as well as a great team of infant nutrition technicians that you can email or message using our live chat function.

It is strongly recommended that water should be boiled before it is mixed with formula so that any harmful bacteria within the water or formula can be killed by keeping as many minerals as possible.
Tap Water
Tap water, when boiled, is a safe option which is convenient as it’s right there in the kitchen, just as long as it hasn’t sat out on the side for a while. Fluoride is usually added to tap water in most areas, however, a surplus of this would cause enamel fluorosis in children; it causes white streaks on their teeth.
There are a lot of parents out there that alternate between distilled or filtered water and tap water with fluoride in, as a good balance. The best tap water is one that only has a fluoride level of 0.7mg per liter, and this can be found by calling the local authorities to find this information.
Bottled Water
It could be that you’re out and about when it’s feeding time, so you don’t have access to the tap water you would have if you were at home. Bottled water is safe to use to mix with the formula, though make sure you choose one with low sodium and sulfate. Sodium levels must be less than 200mg per liter and sulfate must be less than 250mg per liter.
Filtered Water
This type of water is also safe to use with your baby’s formula. To get filtered water, there are plenty of options to buy water pitchers with quick water filtration systems, you just have to make sure the filters are changed regularly. There is a graphic from the Environmental Working Group that shows which filters are best and safest to use, as different types of filters have different contaminants.
As an example, if you want to filter the fluoride, then the filter needed would have a water purification process created to remove fluoride effectively.
Preparing Baby Formula
You have your formula, you have chosen the water based on your needs and situation, and now you have to prepare the formula. The three steps in the progress are:
Wash your hands and sterilize your equipment before you start, then you can bring one liter of water to boil for a minute, to make sure there are no harmful bacteria in the water. It should then be cooled down to at least 104 degrees Fahrenheit, but it cannot be left out for more than 30 minutes.
When it comes to combining the formula, always follow instructions on the formula package to put the right amount of formula into the water mixture that is in the baby bottle. We have a formula feeding chart on our website that you can use to help you determine how much formula you should use and the amount of water you use. After it’s all in, put the lid and teet on and just shake for about 15 seconds to ensure it is mixed well. Before feeding your baby, make sure the mix is not above 98.6F by putting a few drops on the inside of your wrist. If you find it too warm, place the bottle under the cold tap and leave it there for a minute which should cool it down.
After feeding, if there is any remaining formula in the bottle, then discard it as the bacteria can still grow - even in cool places such as your fridge. There is a way for you to prepare the formula in advance without this happening.
The formula that is room temperature or slightly cold is safe enough for your formula to be drunk by the baby. The best way to warm a baby bottle up is by placing it in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. You can never warm them up in the microwave because it can cause hot spots that will burn your baby’s mouth.

What you need to know about toddler formula
As your child gets to 10-12 months old, you will have to change the formula you use so you can provide the right nutrients and vitamins for your growing baby. This is the reason we have stage 3 formulas for toddlers - to make sure your toddler has the best food to grow. Our high-quality formulas provide all the vitamins and minerals needed. Below is more information on toddler formulas to help you make the best decision for your child.
What is toddler formula?
Formula, known as toddler milk, is a formula scientifically designed to give your growing toddler the best vitamins and nutrients; many infant formula brands have toddler formulas too - it is also called stage 3 formulas and follow-on milk.
As it tailors to the needs of toddlers, as does infant formulas, it is regulated by the European Commission and the US’s Food and Drug Administration, through the EC has stricter regulations when it comes down to it and so there are no unhealthy additives within them.
This is why a lot of parents buy European formulas.

What are probiotics?
Probiotics are consumed to improve health, and digestion and boost the immune system, and are bacteria and microorganisms. A misconception amongst people is that bacteria are all bad, and they are all commonly associated with disease and infections. While yes, you do have what’s known as ‘bad’ bacteria, there are also bacteria that are good for you. According to the National Institutes of Health, the human gut contains more than 100 trillion bacteria cells, 10 times more than the number of bacteria cells in your entire body - which is insane! It is well known that the gut microbiome is a complex and fragile internal ecosystem that begins from birth, so there must be some natural exposure to good bacteria to ensure good health. There are three ways that an infant’s microbiome is populated with bacteria shortly after birth:
Why would a child need additional probiotics?
An infant’s immune system is fragile so even the use of antibiotics during the delivery could wipe out all the healthy bacteria in their gut. It’s that simple. So, an imbalance of bacteria can cause symptoms that would distress both the baby and the parent. These are:
Infant probiotics: are they safe?
There is an extensive history of humans and animals consuming probiotics and being safe, while there are few studies that are focused on probiotic safety. They are already part of our diet naturally, so that’s there is to it. Examples of food that naturally contain probiotics are dairy products with live cultures - so as yogurt, and then kefir, fermented vegetables (pickles, for example), and kombucha, which is a probiotic drink. In terms of safety, the question of it would be more about purchasing it in supplement form, so the packaging it comes in and the form it comes in. Always purchase a well-known, reliable brand but pay attention to how it advises you to store it, as some must be kept cold.
Probiotics for infants
There are four methods on how to add more probiotics into your child’s diet, which is what we're about to go through now.
Having good bacteria in your gut has a profound effect on health and well-being, so it’s important to build your child’s gut microbiome from the moment they are born. Building it starts from birth but carries on throughout their whole lives too. Parents like us play a vital role in helping them get their probiotics and protecting their microbiome by assisting them to lead a healthy lifestyles.

1) Burp frequently
Hiccups are often caused by trapped gas, which can distend the stomach. So, you can reduce the hiccups by burping your child. Make sure you read our article on reducing infant gas on our blog!
2) Offer gripe water
This method is sworn by parents and even our staff members! It is a mix of purified water with natural herbs/spices known for settling stomachs. Some variations include:
It’s known as the counter remedy but always consult with your pediatrician before using it.
3) Change the position of the baby
Did you ever try the old wives' tale about standing on your head to get rid of hiccups? Well, don’t do it to your baby. But changing their position can help as it causes different muscle groups to engage, therefore relaxing the diaphragm.
4) Paced feeding
Milk flow can be difficult to control as well as the air your baby takes in during bottle feeding. Excessive gas is, of course, known to irritate the diaphragm and therefore cause hiccups. So finding ways to limit the intake of air during this time will help decrease the chance of hiccups. The main ways to do paced feeding are:
The baby must seek out the milk and the bottle, rather than the parent giving it to them. It allows the maximum amount of milk to be consumed with less air, which means a decreased chance of hiccups.
5) Wait it out
Ah yes, while frustrating, hiccups are harmless and so waiting them out is a viable option also. During this time, just distract the baby from the hiccups - and this may be the best method. However, if they are agitated, distressed, or uncomfortable by their hiccups, then consult a pediatrician who can help rule out any underlying causes.
We are here!
Many babies who are formula-fed struggle with gastrointestinal symptoms such as hiccups, which we have experienced as parents, so our team of expert technicians is here to help. We have a buyer’s guide to the best organic formula which can help answer questions about whether your baby’s formula is best for sensitive tummies or - if not - which one is best.

So, what’s important to you when buying baby formula? Typically, there are a few priorities that our customers have highlighted. They are:
No formula can completely replicate breast milk and its overwhelming list of advantages, but ingredients in European formulas are designed to replicate the nutritional goodness of nursing. This is done by mimicking the blend of proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins, minerals, and micronutrients. If you want to find a formula that’s similar to breast milk, then find one with the absence of corn syrup and sucrose.
European formulas are offered in stages, which are designed to replicate the stages of breast milk and complement the diets of babies who have begun eating solid foods (the latter being for stages 2 and 3). These are the best solution to finding a close alternative to breast milk.
Milk quality is affected by the diet and treatment of the animal that produced it. Formulas produced in Europe have the highest quality due to the strict regulations they must pass before it is sold to parents; they are also organic certified.
Our formula recommendations include Holle Bio PRE which originates from cows on a Demeter-certified farm (the top certification for biodynamic farms) or Jovie Organic Goat formula 1, which is one of the best goat infant formulas out there right now. These brands do not compromise on quality.
The availability of formula is important for a lot of parents - they must be able to buy it last-minute if it’s needed from a local store or be delivered to the house quickly. As seen with the infant formula shortage recently, sometimes relying on local stores can be risky as they may not always be in stock. Having a trusted retailer to buy from that has an existing supply chain exclusively online and who accepts bulk orders to lower costs is ideal for parents - waves - which is what we do here at OnlyFormula.com.
Formula feeding can be pricey and concern is a large concern for most parents, which is what they voice when it comes to European formulas. We have a handy chart where you can see that the cost per fluid ounce is similar or less in a lot of cases and costs $3-$4 max per day. This can be reduced further by buying in bulk here at OnlyFormula.com..
Evaluating your baby’s needs
Every baby’s feeding journey is unique and won’t be the same as another, so different formulas work for different babies! We do, however, have some recommendations from our expert team.
Are you supplementing breastfeeding or doing a combination? If you are using a combination, then Holle formulas are best as they don’t contain prebiotics or probiotics. If you are using an only formula to feed your baby, then we recommend a HiPP or Jovie Organic Goat formula; HiPP formulas contain prebiotics and most have probiotics, except the UK and Dutch HiPP Stage 3 formulas. They offer complete nutrition, which is recommended for exclusive formula feeding.
Jovie Goat Organic is the first European organic formula to use Organic Goat Milk as its no.1 ingredient ! Jovie uses full fat goat milk, using all the inherent and natural benefits of goat milk fat. That way, Jovie has to add fewer ingredients – doing away with ingredients such as palm oil and maltodextrin- to make a complete Organic goat milk formula.
If your baby is sensitive to cow’s milk, then use Holle’s goat milk formulas. If you need a hypoallergenic formula instead, purchase HiPP HA Hypoallergenic PRE, a hydrolyzed formula for those with a milk protein intolerance.
If your baby suffers from reflux, use the HiPP AR anti-Reflux; it is thickened with locust bean gum, which reduces the amount of milk being thrown up. If your baby suffers from digestive problems, use HiPP Comfort as it has reduced lactose.
Check out our Best Organic Formula Buyer’s Guide if you’re still unsure and want to have a detailed look into the formulas.
Decide and Try
This is probably the best method you could adopt when trying to find the right formula for your baby. So, purchase a box, try it for two weeks (it takes around two weeks for the digestive system to adjust to a formula), and then see what happens. If the formula isn’t for you, then we offer support if you need to switch. While we do not accept returns, we do give you a store credit so you can try another formula. As always, our team of experts is on hand to help also!
The first few months after the birth is a time of great adjustment for everyone - the newborn included. Babies and parents alike are learning and experiencing new things, so remember that things such as colic, gas, and fussiness are common. It doesn’t mean you need to change the formula based on those symptoms, but it just means your baby is learning to adapt.
Still unsure?
We have a customer service team that are certified infant nutrition technicians who would love to advise you and work with you to find the best formula for your baby. We’re parents too, which helps us understand what you’re going through. Get in touch via our live chat or email us!
]]>Bebe M has come to solve the problem of food allergies in babies. According to statistics, over the past 20 years, the number of children with allergies has doubled. Food allergies and intolerances affect 8% of children worldwide and today 1 in 4 children has a food allergy. Milk and gluten allergies are primarily common in 0-3 years children.
MILK ALLERGY
A report published by AFSSA (French Health Products Safety Agency) on food allergies in January 2012 found the protein in cow's milk as the 3rd cause of children's allergies with a prevalence of 9%. In France, over 80 000 children are affected, but their number is rising sharply and under-estimated. For such babies, parents must replace the baby formula based on cow's milk, including hypoallergenic milk containing milk protein fragments, or soy isolates containing isoflavones.
GLUTEN ALLERGY
Gluten intolerance or Celiac Disease affects nearly 1% of the population in France as elsewhere in the world but remains misdiagnosed and underestimated. It is an autoimmune disease that causes damage to the intestinal lining through contact with protein fragments of gluten from certain cereals. Only a gluten-free and sometimes dairy-free infant formula brings about an improvement in the condition. Rice is gluten-free and an infant formula based on rice protein hydrolysate is completely safe for gluten-allergy.
ROLE OF BeBe M FOR ALLERGIES
Previously, one of the best available alternatives is conventional, not organic partial hydrolysates of plant-based protein. Bebe M is the first organic plant-based infant range suitable for babies from birth to 3 years old, even the most sensitive ones. As milk protein and lactose are not always well tolerated by babies, Bébé M has decided to create an infant range 100% milk-free, soy-free, gluten-free and palm-oil free
3 INNOVATIVE PRINCIPLES OF BeBe M
BebeM guarantees a 100% organic and optimized formulation process that respects babies' physiology as it works on the principle of triple innovation. The 3 innovative principles implemented by BebeM are:
1: A partial hydrolysate of 100% organic rice protein
This hydrolysate used by the BebeM range is obtained naturally using a mild enzyme process and is ideal for infant formulas. For developing 1 t of an organic rice protein hydrolysate, more than 10 t of whole grain organic rice approved for infant nutrition quality is used. Organic rice protein hydrolysate makes up about 11-17% of one box of Bebe M infant formula. It is recognized as a better alternative to milk protein than soya and has a protein profile close to that of breast milk. Partially hydrolyzed rice protein can be used in infant formula, in line with European Directive 2006/141/EC. A
After hydrolysis of rice protein, a higher bioavailability is attained than native animal or plant-based protein. Due to the natural nature of the product, rice protein hydrolysate is dark beige.
2: 100% plant-based formulations using selected ingredients that respect young children's physiology as closely as possible
This infant formula range is free from milk or dairy products, free from gluten, soy, and nuts, and free from palm oil or trans fatty acids, saccharose, flavoring, or coloring agents. It is based on qualitative, cold-pressed virgin oils that bring in balanced essential fatty acids and offer only natural nutritional supplements. Some specific plant-based organic ingredients selected and approved by competent authorities are also used in order to meet the nutritional requirements of the regulation in terms of micronutrients. These include vitamin D from lichen, EPA/DHA from seaweed, and some other gluten-free flours. All raw materials undergo strict organic guarantees, allergen control, and expensive tests before each production.
3: Low-temperature manufacturing process
Currently, most infant formulas are obtained by atomization or spray-drying, involving a series of technical operations which can affect the powders’ quality and properties determining their nutritional benefit.
As the production method is just as important as the composition, at Bebe M, a new microencapsulation and dehydration process operating under controlled temperatures, protecting the oils and preserving the temperature-sensitive nutrients without overdosing the additives is incorporated. It is a cold treatment process using vegetal cold extracted oils but does not use palm oil. This process also makes the powder easier to reconstitute in water when preparing bottles and also offers a low ecological impact.

Since 2016, Bébé M has been certified as a "Sustainable company (Bioentreprise durable) with a policy committed to social, economic, societal and environmental issues.
WHAT MAKES BEBEM UNIQUE?
Bébé M remains unique today thanks to the development of our organic rice protein hydrolysate. Bébé M is a new and innovative range of baby foods. It has been awarded the Natexpo Golden Trophy for innovation in 2013. The products contain no milk or soy and are elaborated with organic rice proteins, by a patented low-temperature manufacturing process. It is important to bear in mind that Bébé M's infant formulas may differ from other standardized infant preparations.
WHY DOES THE PREPARATION TASTE DIFFERENT?
It is a known fact that even though rice protein hydrolysate is excellent for digestion, it has a slight bitterness. There is no problem with the product and no risk in feeding it to your baby. From experience, we know that babies generally accept and enjoy this formula. Babies' taste buds are different from those of adults, and their appreciation of taste is also different.
WHY ARE THE TEXTURE AND COLOR SO UNUSUAL?
Due to their plant-based organic nature and their cold manufacturing process without palm oil, Bébé M formulas can present variable texture, color, and taste, while maintaining nutritional, allergenic, and microbiological guarantees in compliance with regulations in force. To meet regulatory requirements, organic rice protein hydrolysate can vary in color and give Bébé M infant formulas a beige to light beige color.
The “wet sand” texture is related to two factors:
WHY ARE THERE SMALL SHAVINGS IN THE PREPARED BOTTLE?
The addition of coconut oil in a cold manufacturing process can lead to the formation of small white particles (coconut shavings). They can be larger than 1mm and dissolve after reconstitution with hot water and strong agitation. However, they can still limit the proper flow of a teat with small holes. If required, it is recommended to use teats with larger holes.
If you prepare the bottle carefully (first adding a small amount of water to the powder to form a smooth paste, then adding the rest of the water), the formation of lumps of a rice protein hydrolysate is greatly reduced.
WHY ARE THERE TINY DARK PARTICLES IN BB3?
In the product Cereal with Protein Supplement (Bébé M 3), the deposit consists mainly of cereals. FThe black spots in the deposit are typical of buckwheat. They are completely natural, are not an anomaly, and meet the requirements of organic farming: no chemical treatment to bleach the powder.
SOME REVIEWS ABOUT BEBEM INFANT FORMULA
BebeM infant formula range has already gained a name and has a large fan following. Let’s see some of the reviews by the consumers using it and the doctors recommending it.
“Perfect, perfect, perfect! My little one has an allergy to cow's milk protein so finding the Bebe M formula has been great for us. She's taken well to this formula which has been such a relief as it's allowed me now to stop breastfeeding at 8 months (phew) and she's really happy with it. Fantastic product, I'm really glad I found it!”
“I am a pediatrician and I work in Belgium. I recommend your products to the parents of my little patients when breastfeeding is not possible.”
“My baby was in pain with the other milks (colic) and has regained his calm (and sleep) with the Bébé M.”
"Before feeding my baby with new products, I usually like to try them first. The second stage of baby formula had an unusual smell and a rather bitter taste; I thought my child would never like it. To my surprise, my little one enjoyed the bottle and finished it quickly."
“The first time I prepared a Bébé M feeding bottle, I was quite surprised to see floating bits. I called them to find out what they were, and they told me they were coconut shavings. I realized that I had not prepared the feeding bottle correctly. Now, thanks to their advice, I can get the perfect feeding bottle for my baby by not adding all the water at once, which greatly reduces the formation of lumps. Thank you, Bébé M.”

]]>European Commission and the FDA
The best place to start is the European Commission, the body in charge of European baby formula certifications and regulations. The EC decides what nutrients must go into a baby formula product for it to be sold in Europe, as well as standards for the labels and general food safety. The American equivalent of the EC is the Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA – however, there are many differences between the two bodies. Both set the guidelines for their respective areas, but those guidelines are different.
The Regulations
There are requirements for how many calories, micronutrients, and macronutrients can be included in baby formula, with the European Commission and FDA setting minimums and maximums. When you put them side by side, the rules on proteins, fats, and carbohydrates are pretty similar across the EC and FDA. The same can be said of micronutrients, including calcium, folic acid, vitamin B, choline, and more. In essence, the regulations surrounding the EC and FDA look to force brands to get formula as close to natural breast milk as possible, ensuring the food is not only safe to consume, but healthy and nutritious too.
What makes the European Commission better?
In short, the EC is known to be far stricter on its regulations than the FDA, even maintaining rules over formula stages, allowances, exclusions, and extra inclusions. An EC certification, therefore, holds a little more weight than an FDA certification.
Nutrients – Every baby formula product includes carbohydrates to give your child energy and there are normally sourced from sugars and starches. The list of carbohydrate sources allowed by the EC is very small, featuring the likes of glucose, lactose, maltose, glucose syrup, maltodextrins, gelatinized starch, and pre-cooked starch. Corn syrup is not among the allowed sources – despite it being one of the most popular sources in American products. The EC enforces that a minimum of 30% of a formula’s carbohydrates must come from lactose, because this is the normal main source in breast milk. The same rule does not carry over to the US, so American formulas can legally contain zero lactose.
Exclusions – The EC also has rules on what ingredients cannot be used in certified baby formula products, as well as what ingredients can only be conditionally used. All sources of carbohydrates in baby formulas have to be gluten-free. Sucrose cannot be used unless the formula has hydrolyzed proteins, and even then, it can only amount to 20% of the total carbohydrate level. Fat in baby formula cannot come from cottonseed or sesame oil. Baby formula cannot contain gums (guar and locust) or soluble fibers (fructan or pectin).
Inclusions – As more and more research goes into breast milk and the needs of babies, the EC has adapted its regulations on what can be included in baby formula. Since 2020, all baby formula made for children through the first 12 months of their lives must include DHA, which is seen as an essential fatty acid. If a formula has hydrolyzed proteins as an ingredient, it must also include L-Carnitine to maintain a healthy energy metabolism. Unlike many US products, a lot of baby formulas in Europe include probiotics and amino acids. European formulas are also allowed to use goat’s milk, which is now allowed in America. These products are seen as great options for children who cannot efficiently break down cow’s milk in their stomachs.
Stages – Breast milk does not stay the same throughout the whole breastfeeding process. The properties of the milk adapt to what the baby needs over time. The EC has taken that into account with its rules and regulations, which is why European formulas are staged. Stage 1 products are meant for newborns, stage 2 for six months and over, and stage three for ten/twelve months and over (depending on where you live).
Certifications – Nearly every single baby formula is considered organic in Europe, with many specifically using organic ingredients. The main examples of non-organic products are those that contain protein hydrolysates or locust bean gum because there is simply no organic alternative to those ingredients. If a baby formula has an EC certification, it guarantees that the product is made from animal milk with zero hormones, pesticide residue, or GMOs. There are even stricter requirements for certain certifications in Europe, such as the Demeter and Bioland certifications. Some companies are also taking steps to cut down on their carbon footprint, by using renewable energy and also protecting the ecosystem by not using ingredients like fish oil.
Whole milk options – There are formulas in Europe that use whole cow’s milk or whole goat’s milk, while every formula in the US uses skimmed milk. This is because skimmed milk is an easier base to use when looking to copy the fatty acids found in breast milk using vegetable oil. However, whole milk provides a natural mammalian fat source instead. Some formulas that use whole milk also include Milk Fat Globule Membrane (MFGM) as a result, which is found in breast milk and can improve cognitive development. Interestingly, whole milk is also supposed to taste a lot better than skimmed milk options.
Why European Baby Formula Is Better
The ingredients used in European baby formula products are better, simply because the requirements set out by the European Commission are also better. The nutrients you find in European baby formulas are much closer to natural breast milk, and the EC does not allow ingredients such as guar gum and corn syrup, which are not ideal for young babies. There are so many amazing European options out there, the issue becomes choosing the perfect one for you and your baby.
]]>The ingredients include organic whey, organic skimmed milk, organic lactose, important vitamins and minerals, vegetable oils, omega-3 fatty acids, omega-6 fatty acids, prebiotics, and more. None of these three formula ranges has any gluten, GMO, syrup, preservatives, synthetic nutrients or refined sugars.
HiPP German looks to mimic the probiotics found in natural breast milk by using organic lactic acid cultures. Probiotics are an important ingredient for formula as they improve the health of your child’s gut, strengthen immune systems, reduce eczema, and reduce colic, while ensuring the baby doesn’t get constipated. Experts claim that 30% of a healthy baby’s microbiome is sourced from the probiotics within their mother’s breast milk, which outlines how important it is the mimic this for formula-fed children.

HiPP German FAQs:
Is soy bad for babies? Is there soy in HiPP German?
Some babies can have a sensitivity to soy. However, some products like HiPP German Stage 2 only use soy lecithin as an emulsifier, which means there are only small traces of soy. As such, there is not enough soy to cause a reaction for sensitive babies.
Are all of the ingredients in HiPP German organic?
HiPP German 1 and 2 are both organic, which you can see by the BIO leaf on the box.
A History of HiPP and Holle
We are talking about two brands that have been around for around a century, with HiPP being founded in 1899 and Holle in the 1930s. As such, these are two companies that have spent the last 100 years developing their products to be the very best on the market, both coming with European Commission certifications. For context, the rules and regulations surrounding the EC are even more strict than the FDA. That means each and every product that hits the shelves from HiPP and Holle has to follow these strict guidelines, however, that doesn’t mean every formula is the same. That leaves you with a choice from all these different options, each with its own unique blend of ingredients. In order to make an informed decision, you need to know about the different supplements, micronutrients, and macronutrients that go into each HiPP and Holle product.
The Macronutrients
Carbohydrates are one of the most important areas of focus when it comes to shopping for baby formula, with lactose being an ingredient found in both natural breast milk and quality formulas. Lactose helps to give your child energy, boosts mental and physical development, contributes to a healthy balance of bacteria in the stomach, and helps your baby to absorb calcium which has a whole host of additional benefits. Lactose is actually much easier for babies to digest because their bodies are born with lactase enzymes. Holle Bio Stage PRE is an exclusively lactose product. All HiPP formulas exclusively use lactose as carbohydrates, apart from HiPP anti-reflux.
The EC guidelines state that lactose must contribute to a minimum of 30% of the carbohydrates in baby formula, although that rule is not seen in America. The EC also has a strict ban on sucrose, which is a common ingredient in America and basically constitutes table sugar.
You may spot the ingredient organic maltodextrin on the back of some formula brands. This makes the formula a little thicker and ensures your child has a full tummy for longer as it releases energy at a slower rate. It also doesn’t taste of much and balances nicely against the sweet taste of milk. Holle Goat Stage 1 and 2, as well as Holle Bio Stage 1 and 2, use a blend of maltodextrin and lactose carbohydrates. HiPP anti-reflux is the only product from that brand that uses any maltodextrin as it helps settle a sensitive stomach.
Protein is also an extremely important ingredient within a formula as it is imperative for strength and growth within your child. The protein found in breast milk is four parts casein and six parts whey protein, compared to 80% casein and 20% whey in cow’s milk. You should always look for whey as a preference, or to at least be included, as it is far easier for young stomachs to digest. If they have anything close to 60% whey in there, you know they are trying to get as close as possible to real breast milk. Some products, particularly those designed for sensitive stomachs, even contain 100% whey, or protein hydrolysates to help babies to break down proteins.
Every single Holle formula product on the market includes whey, which is great news. The company’s goat’s milk products can also be better for children who struggle to deal with the protein found in cow’s milk because it is easier for them to digest.
HiPP products also closely resemble the balance of whey protein found in breast milk. The anti-reflux product has 100% whey for sensitive stomachs, and Hypoallergic Stage PRE, 1, and 2 all contain protein hydrolysates – although these products are not 100% organic.
Micronutrients and Other Supplements
Your child’s gut microbiome and immune system are aided by the probiotics and prebiotics found in breast milk. Probiotics make the digestion process easier and can even reduce eczema and reduce colic. Holle prefers to opt for a smaller and simpler list of ingredients, which is why they do not include probiotics or prebiotics. If you want, you can add the ingredients yourself with supplements bought separately. Every single HiPP formula has prebiotics included, while Dutch Stage 1 and 2, Comfort, Anti-Reflux, and Hypoallergenic formulas also contain probiotics.
ALA and DHA are fatty Omega-3 acids, while ARA is a fatty Omega-6 acid. All of these acids are important for brain, immune system, vision, and nerve development in babies. The EC requires all products in Europe to contain DHA, although there are no such requirements in the US.
Before 2020, Holle products did not feature DHA, however, this changed after the new EC rules came in. Any products now produced by Holle include DHA which comes from fish oil or algae for the cow’s milk and goat’s milk products respectively. You will be able to see the levels of DHA on the label, as well as the ALA and linoleic acid levels. Not only did the rules change in 2020, but the new ingredients also changed how formulas need to be prepared, so be sure to read the instructions thoroughly.
HiPP has included ARA and DHA in Stage 1 formulas for a long time, but the levels of DHA, vitamin D, choline and more have increased since the new 2020 rules. In 2020, the recipes for HiPP Stage 2 formulas were altered to include DHA from fish and vegetable oils.
Other Things You Should Know
The regulations for ‘organic’ products are far stricter in Europe when compared to the US, however, Holle and HiPP both have organic EU certifications. The only exception is a few special types of HiPP formula.
Holle also holds the best possible certification you can get for biodynamic farms, as certified and renewed by Demeter each and every year. That ensures Holle must keep up their standards and make efforts to showcase positive animal welfare, preservation of the ecosystem and promotion of biodiversity. In short, they have to be sustainable environmentally and with regard to animals.
Most HiPP formulas are considered to be organic by the EU, apart from Comfort, HA, and AR as they contain non-organic proteins. But even the rest of the ingredients in these three ranges are all organic.
Special Options
There are a number of special options out there for your little ones, especially if they struggle to digest the regular formulas. Rather than chopping and changing in search of the one that best suits you and your child, let us present you will all the information you need to make an informed choice.
Children with sensitive stomachs may benefit from Holle goat milk products as the protein is easier to digest and less allergenic. HiPP, meanwhile, has a number of products designed to help children to break down tricky proteins, including the anti-reflux, comfort, and hypoallergenic products. The HiPP HA PRE formula also contains zero corn, perfect for children who are allergic to CMPA or cow’s milk. It is the closest thing to the US elemental formulas.
Cost Comparison
The cost of a product is one of the top concerns for parents, and rightly so. However, it can get confusing when different formulas contain different weights or measurements, and even use different measuring systems. So, let’s take a look at Holle and HiPP and what they are charging for their PRE and Stage 1 formulas. A quick tip – bulk ordering provides the best prices.
Holle BIO (cow milk) - $0.24-$0.26 per fluid ounce
Holle BIO PRE - $0.26-$0.28 per fluid ounce.
Holle Stage 1 (goat milk) - $0.31-$0.35 per fluid ounce.
HiPP AR - $0.26-$0.29
HiPP Comfort - $0.26-$0.29
HiPP HA and HiPP HA PRE - $0.28-$0.32
HiPP UK- $0.20-$0.22
HiPP Dutch - $0.21-$0.24
HiPP German - $0.23-$0.25
Holle and HiPP actually have very similar pricing models when you look at the formula based on fluid ounces, with HiPP UK and Dutch being the cheapest, and Holle Stage 1 (goat milk) being the most expensive. But even the difference between these isn’t huge. Remember to check those bundle deals!
The difference between HiPP and Holle
HiPP and Holle products have a lot of things in common, they are both providing healthy formula for your babies and at a competitive price too. They both look to get as close to natural breast milk as possible in terms of nutrition, but there are some slight differences in ingredients.

]]>Here are our six tips for a gassy baby:
A change of position –
Trapped gas is exactly what the name suggests, gas within the human body that becomes trapped in the digestive system. This can cause discomfort for your infant, which in turn causes the grumps. However, if you sit them upright for feeding, gravity should become your best friend. Not only will they be able to keep the food and drink down a little easier, but the gas will also be able to escape more efficiently. For bottle feeding, we recommend sitting your child with their back upright against your chest. If you are breastfeeding, the upright football or koala holds are your best bet.
Burping sessions –
The number one rule of gas, as we all know, is better out than in. As such, we recommend treating them to a good burping session as often as possible. There really is no such thing as too much. You should definitely be burping your child after every feed, but every baby is different, and you should explore what kind of frequency works best for them. It is also important to remember that there is no one way to burp, so try a variety of positions to find what works best for you and your baby. Some prefer the traditional over-the-shoulder method, while others like to sit their baby down and gently rub their back.
Special anti-gas bottles –
Believe it or not, the anti-gas bottle does exist! We have not made this up. These bottles are designed specifically to cut down on the amount of air your baby swallows during feeding time. There are a variety of different products available, with most using some form of vent, liner, or insert to reduce gas. We also recommend using smaller-stage nipples to reduce the flow of milk, as this also reduces how much air your baby gasps into their body. The less air in their tummy, the less gas is coming back out.
Probiotics for the win –
It is important to remember that your baby is brand-new! Not everything within their body is fully developed yet, and that includes their digestive system. The microbiome in their gut, which is a mixture of both harmful and friendly bacteria, may not have found its perfect balance yet, which is why probiotics can help. If your infant is prone to gas and nothing else seems to work, it may be worth seeing whether probiotics can bring balance to the gassy force. Infant probiotics usually come in drops or powder form – all you have to do is add the recommended amount to your baby’s normal milk feed. In fact, some formulas already include probiotics as a standard ingredient.
A special formula for a special gassy baby –
Some babies respond better to a more personalized formula, with there being two main groups designed to treat gastrointestinal symptoms. Hydrolyzed formulas include proteins that are easier for a baby to digest because they have been broken down into smaller chunks – HiPP Comfort is a prime example of this. Hypoallergenic formulas usually break proteins down as small as possible (amino acids), making it even easier for a baby to digest. HiPP HA PRE is the best example of this. You should always have a chat with your paediatrician before switching to a special formula.
Baby exercises to get the gas flowing –
There are a number of exercises you and your baby can do to get that gas flowing in a healthy way, so we have picked out a few of our favorites:
Feet lift – Lay your baby in a reclined position and gently lift their legs up above their belly. This relaxes the pelvic floor in a similar way to women when they give birth, allowing gas to flow more easily.
Tummy rub – You may notice that your baby has a firm stomach when they are having gas problems. Fortunately, a little massage from you in a circular motion can help to disperse some of that trapped gas. Clockwise is the best method here as it is in sync with the flow of the digestive system.
Bicycle legs – Lay your baby down so their back is resting against your thighs. Gently move one knee in towards their chest, then back again, and switch the baby’s legs each time. As the left leg goes towards the chest, the right leg should be coming back.
It is important to remember that gas is a very normal part of the human body, so you should not be worried if your child is dealing with gastrointestinal problems. Hopefully, our tips should help you to cut down on gas, deal with it a little better, and put a smile on your little one’s face.
]]>Formula is poisonous…
This is a claim we often heard thrown at parents of newborns who are using formula to feed their little ones, for whatever reason. The most important thing to note here is that it simply isn’t true. Formula is specifically designed to give your baby all the important nutrients, proteins, fats, minerals, carbohydrates, and more they need to stay healthy, just like breastmilk.
Of course, there are other ingredients that go into formula to make sure it looks and feels like breastmilk for your child, but there is certainly nothing that will harm a baby. There are very strict regulations in place to ensure that.
We should also point out that it’s a horrible and unfounded thing to throw at someone. You have no idea about the situation other parents and children are going through, or why they may be choosing to use formula.
A baby sleeps longer when they are fed with formula…
For those scrambling around at the grocery store hoping that formula will give you a quiet night, we’re afraid this one is not true. Some myths claim that babies sleep for longer at night after drinking formula because it is harder for their bodies to digest. This largely stems from a study conducted back in 2003 that concluded babies fed on formula adapted to night-time sleeping at a faster rate. Remember, babies do not always wake up because they are hungry – they wake up for all kinds of reasons, so this myth has no foundation whatsoever.
A baby is more likely to become obese if they are fed with formula…
No again! There have been some studies that show a connection between babies feeding on formula and future obesity, but there has been no significant or scientific link. It may simply be that families who choose to use formula also make other choices that lead to obesity – there could be any number of factors.
Fortunately, this was cleared up somewhat by a study that looked at over 20 years of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY). It found that in siblings where one was breastfed and the other formula fed, there was no increased obesity risk in one over the other.
The conclusion of this study in Social Science & Medicine (PubMed) read: “Once we restrict analyses to siblings... estimates of the association between breastfeeding and all but one indicator of child health and wellbeing dramatically decrease and fail to maintain statistical significance.”
A baby’s IQ can decrease due to formula feeding…
We have seen a load of different versions of this myth floating around, none of which have any standing at all. The main research on this was done within a PROBIT study back in 1990s Belarus, which seemed to show that formula-fed babies recorded lower verbal IQ scores than breastfed babies. However, once the study looked at the mothers, the researchers were able to dismiss that particular conclusion. In fact, it seemed the real takeaway was that the higher the IQ of the mom, the more likely they are to breastfeed.
Formula can lead to ear infections…
While there is some research to back this up, it is more a case of breastfeeding lowering the already small chance of ear infections in babies. A 2016 study showed that six months of breastfeeding resulted in a 95% chance your baby will avoid an ear infection, compared to the 93% chance for babies who are being formula fed. So any increase or decrease for formula and breastfeeding is extremely minimal.
Allergies are more likely in formula-fed babies…
This particular myth likely stems from the fact that mothers are able to pass antibodies to their children via breastfeeding, helping them to fight off certain illnesses and infections. However, a PROBIT study found that in more than 17,000 children, there was no link between breastfeeding and any drop in odds of a baby having allergies. Allergies are actually usually passed down via genetics and are not impacted by formula.
You can’t bond with your baby as well if you use formula…
For some moms, breastfeeding makes them feel wonderfully connected with their child, and skin-on-skin contact is a great way of building a relationship. Getting your baby used to the way you feel and the way you smell is very important, however, that doesn’t mean breastfeeding is for everyone.
Some moms can’t or do not like to breastfeed, but that doesn’t compromise their chance or ability to build a bond with their child. Let’s face it, most of the things that create a bond during breastfeeding can be achieved by simply lying your baby against your skin and feeding them.
The thing that promotes bonding between mother and child is not milk but how you both feel. If you feel happy and relaxed using formula, and your baby still gets to experience that closeness with you, then do your thing!
Using formula is safe and comes with most of the same benefits as breastfeeding, so the decision is completely up to you. Don’t let lies and myths govern how you treat your baby and your body.
]]>
Postpartum depression is a medical condition that a lot of women suffer from after giving birth, it is the most common complication that many women get after having a baby. If you feel like you may be depressed, you are not alone, PPD affects up to 5% of women ( 1 in 7 women).
Symptoms of postpartum depression often start within 1 to 3 weeks of having a baby, though they may develop up to six months afterward and can last for weeks or months. It’s strong feelings of extreme sadness, difficulty sleeping, tiredness, loss of enjoyment, anxiety, worry, feelings of hopelessness and helplessness, and changes in eating patterns and habits. Having postpartum depression doesn’t mean you’re a bad mother, these feelings can make it hard for you to look after yourself and take care of your baby. Do not struggle with postpartum on your own, PPD can be managed effectively by asking for help and reaching out to your healthcare provider.
Here we have compiled a few steps that you can do at home to cope with Postpartum depression:
Reintroduce exercise
Studies have demonstrated that exercise may have worked as an antidepressant for women who suffer from postnatal depression. Physical activity in the form of exercise or walking with a baby in a stroller is a great way to achieve better psychological health and significantly ease the symptoms of depression
Focus on yourself
To get rid of postpartum depression the best thing you can do is to look after yourself. Simple lifestyle changes can play a huge role in helping you feel like your better self again
Don’t forget to ask for help
You may feel trapped on the couch breastfeeding or changing nappies. Motherhood comes with a lot of responsivities. Instead of dealing with everything alone, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Let your partner or any other family member take care of the baby while you rest. Try to dedicate “me time” even if happens once a week. Use this time to unwind, watch a movie, meet a friend, go on a walk, or get yourself a much-needed massage.
Bond with your baby
A successful emotional bond between a mom and a baby allows the child to feel safe. For some parents, the bond forms the moment they set their eyes on their bundle of joy, while for others, it may take some time. Attachment comes with time so there is nothing to worry about. Spending time with your infant will build your relationship and benefit both you and the child. Close contact with your little one releases the love hormone oxytocin. When your body releases oxytocin, you feel happier and more caring towards the feelings of others.
Above all mama, do not forget that you are brave, strong, and resilient. You’re not alone in this, reach out for help whenever the need arises. You’ve got this <3
]]>We appreciate that while breast milk is the ideal choice for newborn babies, it is not always possible or preferred by the mother. So, let’s take a look at how formula stacks up against the real thing.
What is in Breast Milk?
Breast milk is specifically created by your body to meet the exact needs of your newborn baby for roughly a 12-month period, and it even changes as your baby grows, constantly providing exactly what the child needs at that age. The milk itself is made up of a combination of water, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, fats, and minerals, just like any milk.
Believe it or not, the nutritional stats of your breast milk can vary depending on what time of day it is and how long you have been lactating. That being said, scientists have still been able to determine an average level of micronutrients and macronutrients within the milk, based on an analysis of a wide variation of mothers.
Formulas always look to mimic breast milk as closely as possible, but some ingredients cannot be copied, no matter how hard they true. These include hormones, antibodies, and bioactive molecules that help to mature immune systems.
What is in Formula?
As we explained above, formula is not an exact copy of breast milk, but it is a carefully designed composition of the majority of helpful things found within the original. Just like breast milk, it is made up of a combination of water, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, fats, and minerals. In this case, the fats include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like DHA and ARA. To copy the parts of breast milk that boost immune systems, formula uses probiotics and prebiotics. Formula also looks to mimic the calorie count found within natural breast milk, as this dictates how much energy a baby has.
Rest assured, all the helpful nutrients found in breast milk are also copied over into the formula alternatives. These include Manganese, Potassium, Pantothenic acid, Choline, Linolenic acid, Linoleic acid, Inositol, Vitamin C, Vitamin K1, Vitamin A, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Vitamin E, Vitamin D3, Selenium, Phosphorus, Biotin, Magnesium, Chloride, Iron, Sodium, Niacin, Copper, Calcium, Folic acid, Zinc, Iodine.
Protein
The two main types of protein found within milk, in general, are casein and whey. The latter is easier to digest and absorb because of how small it is, compared to the larger casein protein which takes longer for a baby’s body to break down. At the start of a mother’s lactation period, the milk has a lot more whey than casein (90%/10%), because newborn babies need a protein they can break down and absorb fast. However, this transforms to around 60% whey protein and 40% casein as time goes on.
As such, the leading formula brands also provide staged products, with different ratios of protein depending on how old your baby is. The majority of Holle products are generally 50/50 when it comes to whey and casein, while HiPP and Kendamil opt for 60/40. The Holle goat’s milk range does not include any extra whey, so it contains the natural ratio of goat’s milk, which is 20/80. However, this should not be an issue as goat’s milk casein is easier to break down than cow’s milk casein.
Fat
The levels of fatty acids within breast milk depend on the mother in question and their specific diet. Having said that, all breast milk contains some level of polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, saturated, palmitic, stearic, lauric, oleic, palmitoleic, and maccanico fatty acids. You can also find omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids like DHA and AA/ARA respectively. Fatty acids are important for the growth and development of your baby.
Formulas mimic these combinations of fatty acids found in breast milk using a mixture of oils, often choosing skimmed milk over whole milk because oil can then be added. Vegetable oils actually contain many of the same fatty acids as breast milk. Just because you see skimmed milk on a label does not mean the formula is missing the necessary fat, so don’t worry about that. That being said, there are whole milk options on the market too. The fatty acids usually found in formulas include alpha-linolenic, oleic, palmitic, linoleic, and stearic acids.
In Europe, all formula products must now include the omega-3 fatty acid, DHA, which comes from fish oil. DHA helps cognitive development and keeps your baby’s brain nice and healthy. Some products use algae oil instead as a vegetarian alternative.
Carbohydrates
The main sugar found in the majority of milks, including breast milk, is lactose. The same main sugar is also found in goat’s milk and cow’s milk, which are used to make formula. Lactose is a great energy source for your baby, so it is an important ingredient to copy over from breast milk to formula. It doesn’t matter what types of carbohydrates are in them, breast milk and formula both generally have 100ml in total.
However, breast milk contains a lot more carbohydrates in general when compared to milk from cows and goats. As such, formulas need a variety of extra carbohydrates in order to mimic the original. Extra lactose and maltodextrin are common additions.
HiPP likes to add enough lactose until the levels are as close to breast milk as possible, while Holle (apart from PRE formulas) uses maltodextrin because it is easy for babies to break down. It closely resembles the starch you see in common foods like potatoes.
In Conclusion
The nutritional value of breast milk and formula is very similar, because experts specifically design the latter to mimic the former as closely as possible. This covers the levels of carbohydrates, calories, fat, protein, nutrients, and the impacts of each one. There is some variation, but the general idea is to create a formula that has all the same benefits as the real thing. So, you can rest easy knowing that formula is a very viable option for your baby.
